About this audiobook

Many consider Evangeline Hamilton cursed. Orphaned at a young age and possessing a pair of mismatched eyes--one bright blue, the other dark brown--Eva has fought to find her way in a world that constantly rejects her. Yet the support of even one person can help overcome the world's judgments, and Eva has two--Seth and Zach, two former orphans she now counts as brothers. Seeking justice against the man who stole his birthright and destroyed his family, Logan Fowler arrives in 1880s Pecan Gap, Texas, to confront Zach Hamilton, the hardened criminal responsible for his father's death. Only instead of finding a solitary ruthless gambler, he discovers a man not much older than himself with an unusual family. When Zach's sister, Evangeline, insists on dousing Logan with sunshine every time their paths cross, Logan finds his quest completely derailed. Who is truly responsible for his lost legacy, and will restoring the past satisfy if it means forfeiting a future with Evangeline?

Another good story! Forgiveness is not possible to do without God and it is clearly shown that it can only be done through prayer.

I admit I read The Patchwork Family series out of order. I learned about the Hamilton family in More Than Words Can Say which features oldest brother Zach. I found the book charming, so I was eager to learn more about this patched together family. More Than Meets The Eye, book 1 in the series, starts with the main characters as children riding an orphan train to find new families. They are not successful for a number of reasons, and tragedy and a promise cause them to form a family of their own. The book follows Zach, Seth, and Evangeline in their early adulthood. Although they are prospering, they still haven’t found a place in the surrounding community. Differences seen and unseen from the townspeople of Pecan Gap keep the siblings aloof. Two strangers enter their circle, and the dynamics change quickly. I really liked all of the characters in the book. Each has a unique story that many can identify with. The plot moves at a brisk pace, and besides romance, there is mystery and suspense. I loved how God changed hearts and minds as well.If you are a fan of historical romance set in the western America, I think you will really enjoy More Than Meets The Eye. I found it to be a great way to keep on track with my morning walks.Recommended.Audience: adults.(I purchased the audiobook from Audible. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

Logan Fowler has returned to Pecan Gap, Texas with one goal mind: to regain his family farm from the cardsharp who won it from Logan's father several years ago. What Logan doesn't expect to encounter is the trio of adopted siblings he finds living in his home. Particularly the lovely Evangeline Hamilton whose mismatched eyes are only a small sign of the unique personality within. As he gets closer to Evangeline, Logan must face whether the plan he's crafted for so long is worth following.A perfectly charming historical inspirational romance. Witemeyer is one of my go to authors in this genre and this one did not disappoint.

This fantastic Christian historical fiction story by Karen Witemeyer is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. More Than Meets the Eye will pull on your heartstrings as you realize the pain Evie goes through all her life because of her miss-matched eyes. People can be so cruel, not just back then, but even now, when others are different from themselves, in a way they don’t understand. I loved the way the orphans joined together to form a formidable, unshakable bond they considered family. They learned how to deal with each others’ needs in order to create the strongest possibility for each to survive. Both Logan and Zach need to learn that the future is not theirs to shape, no matter how desperate they are they retain their tenuous hold on the future. “...control was an illusion. No man controlled fate. God alone claimed that honor.”Healing from brokenness is a big theme in the book. At first reading, it seems obvious who has the biggest holes in their hearts and who may have transgressed the most. However, broken people heal best when they and those who may stand in judgment all realize that we are all broken somewhere. “People might try to hide their broken places and pretend to be whole, but the truth is that we all have failings. That is why we need each other.” We all need to work together to forgive and forge a new path. I highly recommend this book. I both bought a copy and received a complimentary copy from Bethany House. This in no way affected my opinions, which are freely given and for which I am solely responsible.

This was a different book than I am used to when it comes to Karen Witemeyer, it reminded me initially of a book by Jen Turano with the introduction of a pig. Oops, I mean wild pig. Even so, a PIG!So I admit, that threw me off my game because I couldn’t help but wrinkle my nose at ever reference regarding the pig, although it did have a roll within the book. But still!Despite my initial misgivings, the story proceeded and I pushed myself to continue. It was a lot of play by play and then we were introduced to a new character. From here on, the story picked up and I could not wait to finish the book. The moments I wasn’t reading, I was thinking about the story. It beckoned me and I obeyed. That said, despite my initial hesitations with a story that involves the loving care of a pig, I found that I really, really enjoyed the book.

I was sent this as part of a book tour. This book started off with a bang! It instantly got my attention, as I was in tear during the prologue. After reading just a short chapter, this made me want to reach for the book The Orphan Train after reading the little bit about them with our characters.I loved that this story follows the story of Zach, Seth, and Evangeline. I want a book about their journey as children! Can this be done Karen Witemeyer? I just loved them all so much, and think that would be a fantastic story as well. This does not give to much of their childhood after the train ride, but does follow them as adults. I still really enjoyed seeing them as adults and learning about them along the way. This kept my interest the whole time as there are twists and turns along the way. So many things happened that I did not see coming. I also loved the romances in the story.Overall, I loved this and want more out of these characters in the future.

More Than Meets the Eye by Karen Witemeyer is the first book in the Patchwork Family series. Oh, my goodness. Where do I start? This story grabbed you from page one and didn’t let go even after the last page was read. Evangeline Hamilton was orphaned at a young age. Raised by her two adopted brothers, also orphans, she knows what heartache is. But, she doesn’t let it get her down. Considered cursed because of her mis-matched eyes, she still goes through her day with a spring in her step, a song on her lips and her pet pig by her side. What an example. When her family is threatened she doesn’t give in to getting even. Evie sets out to show God’s love and restoring power. I started this book and stayed up way too late reading. It was just impossible to put down. I can’t wait for the next installment. If you don’t read another book this summer, you have to make time to read More Than Meets the Eye.I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Once again I must say, you can't go wrong with a Karen Witemeyer novel. What ever this author writes I want to read. She has a way of taking you on an unforgettable adventure. I finished this first book in her new series Patchwork Family, and immediately started researching to see when number two will come out. Karen has such a way of building her characters they stay with you long after you have read that last page. In More than Meets The Eye, we have two romances budding, two over protective brothers, at least two bad guys and a lot of love, romance, humor and feisty characters. I found myself laughing out loud one minute and wiping away tears the next. I love the way Christian ethics are always a part of Karen's books, and yet she is never in your face. There were many lines and quotes from this book, but my favorite is “It was Logan's job to live for God, and God's job to take care off the rest:” If you haven't realized yet, I loved this book, and I would highly recommend it.

A book that offers a lot of different things going on including, prejudice, murder, bootlegging, kidnapping, cheating, to name a few. While this book begins on the orphan train, that is not the main focus of this story, yes, it is about the children’s survival, but mostly as adults. We do get a bit of romance here, and it is really sweet with new beginnings, and you can see the faith of these people leading them. This book became a real page turner for me, I had to find out the outcome, and there are a lot of surprises right to the end.I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Bethany House, and was not required to give a positive review.
