About this audiobook

'Smart, witty and bursting with joie de vivre' WENDY HOLDEN
Romantic comedy with a twist in its tail, perfect for fans of Sophie Kinsella, Lindsey Kelk and Mhairi McFarlane.

Jess
, a 29-year-old Londoner with a Kate Beckett fringe and a tendency for dramatics, gets taken on a surprise trip by her long-term boyfriend, Pete, to attend her best friend’s last-minute wedding in South Africa. Jess imagines sun, sand, wine and safaris. And returning to London with an ethically mined diamond on her left hand...

But this holiday isn’t set to be quite the fairy tale Jess has planned... Suddenly she finds her world tilting on its axis, and things are only set to get worse when Jess returns home…

When the truth comes out, will it be... Make or Break?

Catherine Bennetto is back with her trademark wit and an equally hilarious cast of characters who will have you rooting for them from the first page.

Nothing irks me more than when an author decides to throw in a line about politics to signal how woke they are while also revealing how terribly uneducated they are. Just stick to the story next time. It was boring and too long.

Dramatic and hilarious in its ridiculousness! Loved every moment of this crazy read with just enough romance to make you want to know these characters in real life.

The main character is so unlikeable that I couldn’t finish the book, but I hope her boyfriend leaves for someone less annoying.

I just did not sense any chemistry at all between the characters that were supposed to be romantically involved. And the main character was quite annoying but in all fairness I am at the half way point so thinking it may get better- maybe.

I loved it... but the narrators South African accents are terrible! ?

A reasonable story line hampered by the main characters’s propensity for constantly passing judgements, and making comments and reflections that are intended to be insightful or humorous but are usually neither.

I enjoyed this story at first. It is cute and quirky and funny, but it took a turn. Jess, the main character, seem to switch from a mildly eccentric person to neurotic and sanctimonious. Also I really wish that authors would leave their political beliefs out of what is supposed to be a sweet and funny book. One little quote soured my view on this author and I won't be looking up anymore of her books.

The story is great and the narration is excellent. Well done to both author and narrator.

Character development saved this book for me, I Loved It! I struggled with Jess for the first part of the book and didn't think I was going to be able to continue, but I'm so glad I did!

Oh my god the main character is the most annoying person. Less eccentric and more neurotic whose intent on ruining the world for everyone else.
Also didn’t appreciate the comment that diet was a cure for adhd.

What made this book so great? This is the first fictional book that I have read that features Cape Town specifically and South Africa in a broader sense. I enjoyed learning about a place that sounds fascinating especially through the funny lens of a shark-phobic, snake- phobic kindred spirit. A large part of my enjoyment was the setting.

Jess, the heroine, was clever and humorous. The other characters were three dimensional and I fell in love with several of the supporting characters, especially Diego, Lucy and (gasp) even Flora. Jess, rather than her romantic life really takes center stage in this book.

I listened to this as an audiobook (obviously,) which is a different experience than reading an ebook. Sometimes an audiobook improves the experience, and sometimes it ruins it. In this case, I enjoyed the narrator’s storytelling and preferred listening over reading .

The book felt like it was two parts; not only in the setting between (largely) South Africa in the first part and London in the second part but also in the focus. The first part centers mostly around her love life while her relationship with her family takes center stage in the second.

Readers who want full frontal focus on love story will possibly be disappointed but while I’ve become accustomed to this in recent reads, I adapted because the author did such a good job of addressing the complicated matters of the heart.

Although I think I would have appreciated a bit more tightening in editing, (and by that I mean letting go of some sentences that added bulk without enough story enhancement, particularly the bar where Jimmy worked,) I found Catherine Bennetto’s tale to be entertaining, thoughtful, thought-provoking and damn funny!

I liked the writers witty quips throughout, but honestly felt that the story could have ended about 3 hours before it actually did.

Easy read , almost no spice , I liked the narrator. It was long for how mundane the book is . It was a cute story but Pete having a happy ending didn’t didn’t sit right with me .

Really fun read. I LOVE this author’s writing style. Full of creative descriptors, and often hilarious. And the tough subject of a secret family was handled very beautifully. Well done!

This book is quite good. The compulsive-obsessive personality of the main character is a bit over-bearing, but as the story develops, the plot takes more place. It is an interesting love story with really insightful characters, so give this book I try. It’s really worth it. Just the end is a little over the head. All the “overreacting” and excess of drama for her parents story is not that nice, and her attitude towards her father is a little too self-righteous.

The narrator was wonderful, storyline was decent, but personally the main character I found extremely annoying and exhausting. All of the characters were decently developed but I just really struggled with Jess.

I don’t like leaving things unfinished, so I made it to the end, but otherwise probably wouldn’t have continued past the first quarter of the book.

I laughed out loud at so many places. My mental state is that of the main character, as an adult with ADD it was refreshing to read what was going on. Well written and well narrated.

The main character is the most childlish / selfish / infuriating woman ever ! I wanted to like her at first, but really I wouldn't stand her in real life. I don't know why her family / Friends put up with her ? She's judgemental, whiny, makes no effort to ever change and expect everyone else to be accountable to her. I wanted to scream to her : GET OVER YOURSELF. I listen to audiobooks as a background when I do manual work or drive, but even without my whole attention I couldn't get throught the end. I honestly throught she would be called out for her attitude and get a wake up call but after a while I realised the author wasn't going this way. I stopped listening before the end, I hated the main character too much, and this is quite exceptionnal for me to do.
