About this audiobook

A bride wasn’t in his plans . . .

The last thing Marcus, the Duke of Autenberry, expects to see after sleeping off a night’s drunken shenanigans is a woman being auctioned in the village square. Before he can think about the ramifications, he buys her, thinking he’s winning the girl her freedom. Instead, he discovers he’s bought a wife.

A duke wasn’t in hers . . .

Alyse Bell is almost rid of the shackles that bound her in a name-only marriage, but the day her friend promised to purchase her in a wife auction, he vanishes, leaving her to face a mob of unsavory bachelors intent on owning her body and soul. But the appearance of a wicked, wealthy stranger changes her path forever.

The road to ruin . . .

Marcus doesn’t know what to do with the impertinent chit who clearly isn’t duchess material! Insisting their marriage isn’t legitimate, they leave for his estate in Scotland, hoping to devise a plan to get rid of each other. However, on a journey fraught with misadventure, their attraction grows and Marcus realizes he’ll do anything to keep this fiery woman for his own.

It was so hard for me to decide whether to give it four or five stars. I usually reserve five stars for absolute top-of-the-line books that I will, or could enjoy reading again. I did thoroughly enjoy this audiobook I felt like the story was unique and had some twists I didn’t anticipate as well as characters from a previous story that made a guest entrance. I only had a couple issues with the book. One was that the narrator often made the male main character’s voice more forceful and angry sounding than she should have especially in the intimate scenes. Haha That aspect was pretty terrible! It definitely affected the mood! Then, when you combined it with times when he accused the FMC of trapping him, he just sounds like a real wanker with issues. I think that the narrators shortcomings reading the male part combined with how he was written at times, make him less likable than he could’ve been. He was harder to warm up to than a lot of other lead men. That being said, the only other part I took issue with was a twist at the end, where the FMC takes off because she believes she’s unwanted. Not only did I find that unbelievable or not likely in her situation, but I found it unnecessary for the story. Otherwise, I quite enjoyed the book and thought it was an original and interesting story.

Loved it! Now I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Will spend my time waiting reading the first two of the series.

This book had me suffering for the most part of this book, and all because of Alyse. My poor little thing. While Markus was a tough character, which we already knew. I liked his arc-redemption that didn't come overnight.
The highlight of the book is without any doubt in my mind: the sex scenes!! OMG! You could feel the tension in the air!
The only "however" I have, is the last part. The drama in the highlands and all that. But all in all, an enjoyable read!

Loved this one!The premise was definitely unique--heroine, who was handfasted (I guess? I don't think they actually used that term, but she definitely wasn't a traditional wife for the seven years she raised his children and ran his house) to a much older man is sold at an auction when the old guy decides it's time to move on with a widow his own age instead (now that Alyse has done all the heavy lifting, of course). The childhood friend who's supposed to come for her instead books it out of town at dawn, and a duke who's passing through (after waking up face-first in horse dung!) manages to swoop in just in time to prevent the lecherous tanner from buying her for 16 pounds.Essentially this is a road trip romance, as Alyse and Marcus spend most of the book traveling through Scotland to get to his Scottish property, where he's never been and where he tells Alyse she can be his housekeeper. He wants to brood in silence, she feels conversation will make the time pass faster. (Anything's better than the tanner, she reasons, but at the same time she's constantly planning ahead for some way to gain future freedom.) Naturally there's all kinds of forced proximity issues, an illness, an abduction, family drama, and a recalcitrant mule to add drama. His stodgy stuffiness is nicely counterbalanced by her feistiness, and their back-and-forth is what really makes the book. This is the third in the series, but worked just fine as a standalone. The couple from book one make an appearance and Marcus complains at one point to Alyse about the couple in book two, but you don't have to have already read their stories to understand the underlying issues--Alyse doesn't know them either, so Marcus gives her the pertinent deets. (Word bookstore's Kiss Club had the audio of book two, The Scandal of It All , on sale this month, so I snapped it up ASAP. And book 1 was on my TBR the second I realized it was a historical romance version of While You Were Sleeping...)Rating: 4 stars / A-I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Marcus, Duke of Autenberry, is running away to his estate in the highlands of Scotland when he comes across a wife auction in a village market square. Alyse Bell has fulfilled the 7-year contract for a 'white wedding' and now is ready to move on, providing her best friend buys her and takes her to London. When he doesn't show up, Alyse is left to the dubious mercy of the crowd - until Marcus buys her out of pity.Apparently, this was a real thing in the days when divorces and annulments were hard to come by. It makes for an interesting premise that mostly failed to live up to its promise. Alyse and Marcus were too hot and cold for the storyline to make much sense. I did enjoy seeing what happened with Marcus after his appearance in a previous book in the series, but the idea of the haughty Duke with a common farm girl wife didn't work for me, especially after his disdain for the shopgirl in While the Duke was Sleeping. It was an okay and quick read. The sex scenes were fine though not until late in the book, and there were a few funny moments, especially with the laird who kidnaps Alyse. I'm looking forward to his book.

To be honest, most of the regency romance novels do follow the same recipe. However, it is in the characters that each story differs a bit. However, with this book, I was not feeling the love for the characters as much as I wanted to. I felt bad for Alyse and the situation that she found herself in being auctioned off. Marcus didn't come off as endearing in the beginning. In fact, he was standoffish. Which, made it hard to imagine these two falling for each other. While, Alyse is nice, she was a bit reserved. So between these two, it made for a long carriage ride. By the end of the story, I was feeling chemistry between Alyse and Marcus. Overall, this may not have been a favorite of mine.
