Er hat seine Gedanken in seinem Werk "Confessiones" (Bekenntnisse) niedergeschrieben. In seinen Bekenntnissen zeigt er die Zerrissenheit des Menschen in der Zeit und die Ruhe der Ewigkeit Gottes auf. Augustinus erkennt, dass die Heimkehr zu Gott nur im "Himmel des Himmels" (caelum caeli) möglich ist; hier wird das Unvereinbare zwischen der Zeit und der Ewigkeit ausgeglichen.
