About this audiobook

New York Times bestselling author John Connolly masterfully intertwines mystery, emotion, violence, and the supernatural in this raw and gripping thriller.

He has been told the girl’s last words, and he feels unaccountably afraid. The dead ones. They were dead, but they had lights. Why do the dead need light?

Three hundred years ago, the settlers on the small Maine island of Sanctuary were betrayed to their enemies and slaughtered. Since then, the island has known peace. Until now. A gang of four men are descending on Sanctuary, intent on committing a brutal and relentless massacre. All that stands in their way are rookie police officer Sharon Macie and the strange, troubled officer Joe Dupree. But Joe is no ordinary policeman. He knows the island has been steeped in blood once and that it will never again tolerate the shedding of innocent blood. The band of killers who are set to desecrate Sanctuary will unleash the fury of its ghosts upon themselves and all who stand by them. On Sanctuary, all hell is about to break loose...

As a huge fan of John Connolly, I was so excited for this book! The more I listened, the less excited I became.

This was by far the worst narrator I have ever heard! He would go in and out of odd accents for no reason, and wasn't at all consistent. I couldn't even tell if he was attempting a Southern or English accent. It was really that bad. I also couldn't couldn't tell which character he was attempting to portray. Forrest Gump would've had better inflection.

The book itself wasn't at all good either. I was excited to learn more about Sharon Macy, as I've read all of the Charlie Parker books. That took up about one chapter. The only other character I even remotely liked in this book dies. I won't include a spoiler, and tell you who, but consider yourself warned.

I would have given up a quarter of the way through, but it's John Connolly, so I held out hope. That was my second mistake. My first one was listening to this book in the first place.

Bad Men was an enjoyable read. I liked that Charlie Parker makes a couple of cameos in the book, tying it into the same universe as the Parker novels. The book had an atmospheric feel to it and the descriptions of the storm and supernatural entities really complimented the story.

In the late seventeenth century Indians consistently raided the various islands in the area outside of what is known today as Portland, pushing the white settlers away. But in 1691 thirty individuals arrived to Dutch Island, which at the time was also known as Sanctuary, and decided to give it a try. Bauer, one of the men that formed part of the group, was justly accused of attempting to rape another man's wife. When he asked his own wife for shelter against his pursuers she did not comply and he was captured. However, he was able to escape and he returned years later with renegade Indians as his "hired help" bringing mayhem to the village. After the horrible events that developed in the island, the ghosts of the dead were left behind to cohabitate with the living. Usually, they do not interact much with humans, but now something is growing, and some people in the island can feel it. I don't want to give too much away. So, sit back forget all you know about "what scares you" and delve into a novel that blends the best of everything.....the undead, cannibalism, adultery, compassion, honor and revenge.
As it has been said: "Sanctuary does not always mean safety"!

Extraordinarily frightening, tense and grisly read from a master of suspenseful storytelling. Difficult to set aside from the first few paragraphs to the last satisfying word. So beautifully crafted one can hardly accept that the action and riveting story line are merely a work of fiction. A thrilling read!

Part crime novel, part mystery/suspense novel & part paranormal novel this story involves an island with a dark past, a past that is now starting to resurface. This is the first John Connolly novel I've read and it was very enjoyable, the writing is detailed and atmospheric really drawing you into the story and environment.I've heard some people say that it is too violent however I did not particularly feel this to be the case, and it wasn't at all gory. Whilst there is death and some characters meet their ends in an unfortunate manner it does not delve into the intricate manner of their deaths. I consider this to be a positive as often some otherwise good stories get bogged down in the gore, most times rather pointlessly. Overall, an excellent crime/mystery/suspense novel.

I enjoyed this stand alone novel by John Connolly. His characters are well drawn and believable. The setting on a small island off the coast of Portland, Maine, gives extra suspense that the bad men are arriving and there is little escape for the innocent. The protagonist, Joe Dupree, is a giant of a man and the protector of the island's secrets. He's very believable and the kind of character who the reader becomes fond of and wants to see succeed. There was a massacre on this island many years ago and the spirits of the dead are able to rise up when something of an evil nature is going to happen again. There are a number of surprises that add to the entertainment and overall I felt the book highly entertaining.

Well written book, did scare me towards the end and great build of momentum. Really enjoyable read, one of John Connolly's easier to read books. I was hooked after the first chapter. This story really grabs you and sucks you in, if you like a good murder/crime fiction with a bit of realism about it, this is the story for you. Nice bit of mystery about it.

Had a hard time with the beginning, but once I sorted out the characters and why there were so many of them, I enjoyed the novel.

This is the fourth “thriller” I’ve read by Connolly and in my opinion the best one yet. As some of the other reviewers have stated the story is previously covered ground but the author weaves a nice plausible story. The setting for the story is definitely creepy and real enough with characters that develop sufficiently to grab your attention and plenty of action to move the story along. The big finale of the book worked and while anticipated was well done. This was the first thriller that I’ve read by Connolly in which the ending didn’t seem rushed or hurried with a finality which was less then satisfying. Overall, this was a good read with a the nasty “crunch” you expect from Connolly. Recommended for anyone that enjoys killers, action, and ghosts.

This horror-thriller takes us back to familiar territory – a small town in Maine that looks idyllic on its peaceful surface, but which hides a terrible secret: something dark and malevolent lurks out in the woods, something cold and growing and mindless in its urge to main and destroy. Who will win the day? The familiar lineup of good guys, i.e. the good-hearted but misunderstood small-town cop; the pretty woman with the past she must suppress and hide; the sensitive little boy who sees things no one else can see; the mentally-impaired youth who’s sweetness personified; the bookish middle-aged guy who speaks in paragraphs' worth of prosy historical background? Or the menagerie of sadistic rapists and killers who have been ensnared and infected by the nameless evil whose time has come? Stephen King is yet again – oh, wait, check that; who wrote this book? – John Connolly is yet again putting on a stock show here, with little originality in evidence. This has all been done before -- and done better -- so I’d spend my reading time elsewhere. It’s a pity, since Connolly’s Parker novels are weird and wacky in a much more entertaining and original way.

Disappointing. Asked to suspend too much logic.

This is a great story. Chilling in the extreme, not least because much of the terror is caused by the base cruelty of an abusive husband. Mix this with revengeful ghosts and you have one scary tale! Some of the plot was fairly predictable, which is why I gave it a seven, but there were some twists as well. All in all a good read.

Not very good. When you have to name the bad guy Moloch just to show how bad he is, you're being lazy. The main character reminded me of the Chief from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. That guy never would have wound up as a sheriff.

Wow for a first book, this one is awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It would make a great movie.
