About this audiobook

Lord Jasen of Grumhul, an impoverished young nobleman, has come to the Draelands to find a rich husband to help pay his father's debts. To the shock of everyone, he ends up attracting the attention of King Rilvor himself, and the dragons who control the magic in the land. Becoming royalty wasn't something Jasen either expected or wanted, but he can't control his growing feelings for the kind and handsome king. Scheming factions at Court conspire to keep him from Rilvor's side, and now Jasen has to decide if the chance at true love with Rilvor is worth the burden of being the husband of a king.

It was solidly okay. I liked the world it was based in, and the characters were alright. The love seemed two-dimensional with how quickly it moved, but I understand given the constraints of the plot. The lack of detailed affection and spice definitely made this a less enjoyable read for me, personally, but it was still fun and I did like reading it.

Sweet story, a bit heteronormative with gorsets and sudden love declarations after a few meetings, kept attention nevertheless.

It's a very good book it takes a minute to get to the romance and there is no spicy scenes which I think would have made this better.

The start looked promising, but... I'm not sure. Maybe I was expecting more.

This is a beautiful story. Very intriguing I couldn’t put it down. Listened to it straight for two days. The characters are adorable and funny. I wish there was spice but still a great read.

Reading this book gave me the same feeling as watching Lord of the Ring and Outlanders. It was really enjoyable and there were times I was laughing out loud the art and the visuals of the place the story took was really beautiful as well.

This was a very lovely story. I loved the magical aspect, the intrigue and the romance. I was pleasantly surprised that, while some things were predictable, not everything was. The story was well paced and the plot wasn't overly convoluted. It kept me wondering what would happen next. The narrator did well bringing the story to life. I was never bored listening to this book. Well done, would listen to another by the author.

Dragons, to me, are fascinating creatures, whether they are dragon shifters, dragons with telepathic and other magical abilities, or the dragons in fairy tales. In ‘Consorting with Dragons’, a wonderful free novella, they are of the magical kind, very similar to the ones in the ‘Dragonriders of Pern’ science fiction series by Anne McCaffrey. In this story, they are somewhat more self-sufficient, but do have the occasional interaction with humans who have built a whole culture around them. The Lord of Drae is the link between dragons and humans, and responsible for ensuring humans’ magical abilities, fed by the dragons, remain strong. In this novella, the latest Lord of Drae is looking for a wife or husband, a consort, to help him carry that burden.

Jasen comes form the most backward kingdom of the Allied Realms, is the son of a poor noble who has gambled his deceased wife’s fortune away, and is now supposed to fetch a good marriage price so his father can pay his debts. Not a nice position to be in. What is worse is that he has no self-confidence, is as clumsy as they come, and has no education or understanding of court etiquette to speak of. And he is supposed to “snag” the king? All he thinks will happen is a three-month vacation in the Draelands (the largest kingdom) while he is being tested and trained, then introduced to the suitors looking for a husband. But that is not what happens at all when the king, whom Jasen meets and complains to before he even knows who he is, takes a sudden interest. The threatening responsibility does not make Jasen happy.

Amidst courtly intrigue, backstabbing from the other “candidates” and a flirty bodyguard, Jasen tries to keep his head above water and his nose clean. But he doesn’t stand a chance, instead endearing himself to the king more with each “mishap”. He is so honest and straightforward, I cannot blame Rilvar, who insists Jasen call him by his given name, for being so enthusiastic. As are the dragons – and that is a wonderful part of the story all by itself.

If you like sentient dragons who have more than a little magic and influence over their human friends, if you enjoy fairy tales where the king has to fight for his prince, and if you’re looking for a sweet romance with some angst, lots of drama, and wonderful magic, then you will probably like this free novella. I loved it!
