About this audiobook

The bravest of heroes. The brashest of rebels. The boldest of lovers. These are the men who risk their hearts and their souls-for the passionate women who dare to love them . . .

He is known only as The Rook. A man with no name, no past, no memories. He awakens in a mass grave, a magnificent dragon tattoo on his muscled forearm the sole clue to his mysterious origins. His only hope for survival-and salvation-lies in the deep, fiery eyes of the beautiful stranger who finds him. Who nurses him back to health. And who calms the restless demons in his soul . . .

A LEGENDARY LOVE

Lorelai will never forget the night she rescued the broken dark angel in the woods, a devilishly handsome man who haunts her dreams to this day. Crippled as a child, she devoted herself to healing the poor tortured man. And when he left, he took a piece of her heart with him. Now, after all these years, The Rook has returned. Like a phantom, he sweeps back into her life and avenges those who wronged her. But can she trust a man who's been branded a rebel, a thief, and a killer? And can she trust herself to resist him when he takes her in his arms?

Author

Kerrigan Byrne

Kerrigan Byrne has done many things to pay the bills, from law enforcement to belly dance instructor. Now she's finally able to have the career she'd decided upon at thirteen when she announced to her very skeptical family that she was going to "grow up to be a romance novelist." Whether she's writing about Celtic Druids, Victorian bad boys, or brash Irish FBI Agents, Kerrigan uses her borderline-obsessive passion for history, her extensive Celtic ancestry, and her love of Shakespeare in almost every story. Kerrigan lives with her husband on the coast of Washington State's Olympic Peninsula in a Victorian-era town almost frozen in time. When she's not writing, you might find her on the beach with her dogs, lounging at a local vineyard or brewery, or buying things she doesn't need at antique stores. Her novels with St. Martin's Press include the Victorian Rebels series (starting with The Highwayman) and Devil You Know series (which begins with How To Love A Duke in Ten Days).

The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo was, hands down, the most emotionally powerful second chance romance that I have ever read. Furthermore, there was a captive-captor romance portion to this story and just to warn you, some possible triggers for sensitive readers. There were many moving moments during this story and I was blown away with just how deep my feelings went for these characters. There were also instances of sheer brutality coupled with despicable characters that made my skin crawl. I loved that the heroine had strength that was truly a deep well for all that she endured and her self-sacrificing nature made her so endearing. Reading this story was akin to being on an emotional rollercoaster. The Rook’s character was just frightful to me. His head was not in the right place and he did not inspire swoon-type feelings in me for a majority of the book. He did inspire me to sympathy though, buckets and buckets of that feeling. The Author did an amazing job of creating a character who seemed quite obsessed and skating on the edge of his sanity but she still had me holding out my judgement and that is definitely not an easy task. I had “met” this character when he was known as Ash and I was holding out hope that he was still in there somewhere. I truly did appreciate that even though The Rook seemed crazy he was all about protecting Lorelai.I can tell you that The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo was a memorable story written in such a way that you will feel every emotion that the Author intended, vividly. By the end of the story I had stopped worrying about whether The Rook was going to finally lose it and was crossing my fingers that everything would work out well for this couple. The relationship and history between The Rook and Lorelai was the kind of romance where you do nothing but yearn for these characters to have a happily ever after because they truly deserved one. Overall, this is a second chance romance that will make you forget all other second chance romances and I highly, highly, recommend. This review is based on a complimentary book I received from NetGalley. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.

I really enjoyed this historical romance with unexpected twists and turns. I listened because I wanted to know more about the characters after finishing The Earl on the Train. Now that I've finished I am going back to the beginning to listen to the whole series. Derek Perkins is a wonderful narrator!

The latest installment in the Victorian Rebels series is just one incredible revelation after another and it keeps the reader guessing from start to finish.

This review will be short so as to avoid spoiling any of the surprises interspersed throughout. Suffice it to say that the romance between the pirate known only as the Rook and the shy and sheltered Lorelai is intense and emotional. The love these two share is awe-inspiring.

While Lorelai is not the kick-ass heroine that I usually prefer, she has her own brand of strength and spirit that complement's the Rook's darker and harsher traits. Moreover, her sweet and caring nature is the perfect balm for his traumatic experiences.

All in all, a wonderful story with surprises in virtually every chapter.

I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, and then the next three were just okay for me, so I was feeling bummed that the series seemed to be petering out. But I loved this one and it has me excited all over again for the next two books in the series to come out!

2nd read- I really just enjoy this one. The hero is hardened and dangerous, but also practically worships the heroine, (and for actual qualities even, not just because she was beautiful across a ballroom or something), that juxtaposition is so much fun to read! Events are dramatic, with memory loss and pirates and all, but it really doesn't feel contrived or that it's drama just for drama's sake. And there's lots of thoughts and events from the hero's perspective.

3rd read- Dang, this hero has had such a brutal, violent past, and it's made him into a brutal, violent man. And then the heroine is so big-hearted, and sweet, and kind of timid. lol. He could so easily squish her into the dirt, but instead she becomes his everything. It's quite a tale, and one I thoroughly enjoy.

My least favourite of the books so far. I could not connect with the Hero in this one, and the sudden change of heart in the Heroine seemed rushed. The twist of this story was mostly beautiful. I'm not sure redeemable one of the characters will be for his own novel, though. Also, I thought there would some kinky scenes in here, and there were not.

There were times I didn't feel like I should be enjoying this book as much as I did. It follows the same tortured-hero-long separation as 1/2 of the series (or so). But I loved that part. It features the hero who knows nothing but cruelty for everyone but the loyal few and is ruthless as hell-even at times to the heroine. But...I loved that too. And I liked that the tiger doesn't change his stripes (as usual) but his soft underbelly is exposed...but in the most ferocious way.

And I thought The Rook/Ash was damn romantic. I liked his words. I liked his actions. Tattooing animals of the world to bring back to her. so wickedly sweet

Lorelai was super sweet, but at times hard with how naive she could be. Mistaking piece for peace? Really? Didn't even make sense. There were times I was wondering how she didn't pick up on this or that, and protests that didn't persist when they should've increased, but overall..she felt like a new heroine, one who was much softer than the prior ones despite her trauma, and that worked really well to balance out Ash's ferocity.

I didn't particularly love a couple of the plot contrivances to get to resolution, particularly how late they were. Bits of it felt really rushed, and there were beautiful conversations...but there were a lot of them I'd give this a 3.5, but a really solid one that I'll be rounding up for it's binge-worthiness. So yes, formulaic. So yes, maybe too reliant on dialogue. But what fun.

Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I am getting to continue my current dragon theme with The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo. This was another NetGalley ARC that I received that I am delayed to read. Super thankful for the opportunity I was given to read this pirate-themed romance.I have never read a book by Kerrigan Byrne before. I am completely new to the Victoria Rebels Series. So I just want to let you know that you can absolutely pick this up and roll with it. There is zero confusion about other characters in the world. This could very well be a beginning to the series if I didn't know any better. It is written so fantastically. I don't have a wonderous vocabulary like a lot of other reviewers. I am not in denial about that. So there were so many words that I get to add to my vocabulary because of this book. Kerrigan Byrne did a fantastic job, of keeping the Victorian feel by using words that would fit into that time period. Instead of just saying "if she had her preference, the word that was used was druthers. There are tons of little words like that that I appreciated. I have read a Victorian style book and the words used are too close to current time.I enjoyed this book so much not just because of the personal gain with the vocab, but because of the change for the characters. You have a physically weak and nurturing woman who grows to be strong and commanding a little by the end. You have a man who has lost his memories of his younger years and is only left with memories of pain, torture, being a slave traded off to the highest bidder. He has created a hard life for himself as a pirate. He had become almost revered as a god to his crew because of how ruthless he was. The self-discovery for each character takes a well-planned path.I think the only thing that I didn't care for was how Lorelei acted the same as she didn't when they were younger. If felt like an infatuation. Although she claimed to have grown up from the abuse from her brother, she still had a girl feel to her. I would have liked her to show a little more of her confidence a little earlier.****Spoiler**** There is another part to her adult character that I didn't like also. It felt like it was put there to add a little extra to a scene but it didn't really have to be there. The fainting I could have lived without. It happened once, and her sister in law said that it happened all the time. And why wasn't her afraid later to make her faint again. I guess if it was later and he had a thought maybe one or two more times like "what if I cause her to faint"... I might have bought it a little better.

Be still my beating heart!Oh my! I love this group of brothers-in-arms, and their stunning women! The Rook's story is no exception.A naked corpse beneath an ancient ash tree is just the beginning of a saga filled with betrayal, treachery and brokenness. Apart from his damaged body, the only identifying feature about the stranger is an arresting dragon tattoo festooning his forearm.Lorelai Weatherstoke, daughter of Sir Robert Weatherstoke, the Earl of Southbourne, who spotted him from the family coach assists with his healing. She's drawn to the stranger, and in turn her presence calls to some place deep inside him, to his very soul. Lorelai names the stranger Ash. Thus death is denied. Ash had "lived only because she bade him to." And then the young man Ash leaves ... with a promise to return. That returning takes twenty years under horrendous circumstances. And what a return! High drama, tragedy and heart wrenching agonies cling to the man known as The Rook. Lorelei finds herself in uncharted territory looking for the young man she once knew. What she finds is that a dark and powerful new Phoenix has arisen. Drawn to the Rook she searches for remnants of Ash. The electricity between them is palpable. And what can I say about 'The kiss!' It seemed like it spanned pages and is just beautifully written!A powerful read with a tortured hero and an equally as troubled, albeit in a different way, beguiling counterpart.A NetGalley ARC

The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo by Kerigan ByrneVictorian Rebels #6At fourteen and eighteen a young woman and young man fall in love and think they will have forever together but nope…they will be separated for nearly two decades and in those years much will happen. The young girl will continue to suffer torment at the hands of her brother and the young man, without a memory, who has suffered much already will suffer even more. When kindhearted Lorelei Weatherstoke sees a body on the side of the road while traveling with her father and brother she has them stop, see if he still breathes and he is taken to their home to be treated for his horrific wounds. A year they spend together in innocent joy only to find themselves separated by a dastardly hand played by an evil person. A promise made by the boy now named Ash is one he plans to keep but for years he is unable to keep that promise. When he finally does return he has changed significantly with most of his softness seemingly gone forever. Whether or not the two will be able to find a way to a happily ever after is up in the air for a while but as with any good romance, and all in this series, it comes right in the end and the two do find a way to a happy ending. What I liked: * The overcoming of adversity* The strength of both lead characters* Finding out who “the boy” really is* The pirates with the kittens* The appearance of “the boy’s” old friendsWhat I didn’t like: * Mortimer – evil incarnate – a sadist* The weak-willed spineless father of Mortimer and Lorelei* The twenty years endured by H/h* Poor Veronica’s situation with Mortimer* The pirate I thought might be good who really wasn’t* The time between books? Was it believable? PerhapsDid I like it? YesWill I read more books in this series? YesThank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC – This is my honest review. 4-5 Stars

The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo by Kerrigan Byrne is a 2018 St. Martin’s Press publication. Out of emotional and physical damage comes an epic love story which is both tender and very sensual. In this unusual romance, Lorelei, a crippled girl at the mercy of her cruel brother, rescues a man left for dead on the side of the road, while in her early teens. Although many years have passed since she last saw him, Lorelei never forgot “Ash”, who had promised to come back for her. But, as her brother gambles away his fortune, he arranges a marriage for Lorelei. However, before she has a chance to exchange vows, the infamous ‘Rook’ arrives and whisks her away. Lorelei instantly recognizes him as her beloved Ash, but the man she once knew is no longer visible. In his place is the formidable and terrifying man with a reputation as a thief and a killer. “She was his prayer in the night. His song in the dark. His past and present. His future.”Ash is buried deep inside the man known as ‘The Rook’. He’s a ruthless pirate, a man with a brutal past, but Lorelei is his one weakness and his only hope. Lorelei is stunned by Ash’s appearance, the change in his countenance. She’s terrified of him, feeling as if she and her sister-in-law are being held captive. But, our noble heroine soon sees the traces of the boy she once nursed back to health. Ash is in there somewhere, she just has to find a way to convince him of that. “To hate you must remember, you must dwell. You must hold it in your heart all the time and feed it.”This is a fantastic second chance at love story! I love, love, love those flawed heroes!! Back in the heyday of historical romances, rough edged heroes with an aura of danger about them, men whose trustworthiness is in question, was common. As times changed those heroes fell out of favor, but with the Victorian Rebels they have made a comeback, but with a modernized twist. Byrne creates strong characters, giving them real adversity to overcome, with plenty of action and adventure. This story is a stunning page tuner, highly engrossing and almost impossible to put down. It’s a moving story with some truly astounding twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. The story has everything that made me fall in love with historical romance in the first place – a dark hero, pirates, intrigue, danger, sweeping romance, and redemption. I thoroughly enjoyed this installment in the series and hope for many more like it in the future. 4.5 stars

3.5-3.75 StarsAlthough this book is part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone (this one is the first novel by the author I've read). A historical pirate romance with a focus on second-chance love. The two MCs and their journey to overcome abusive pasts and their quests to find themselves and each other are central to the story arc. At some point, the plot does get a little blurry, but overall a quick and easy romance.Net Galley Feedback

When life doesn't seem to be going my way I can always cheer myself up with a good romance novel (especially if it has pirates). This book came along at the perfect time for me.This book follows Lorelai and Ash (Ash is called a few names throughout the book but I am choosing to call him Ash because just like Lorelai I don't like calling him the Rook). Lorelei finds Ash when he is close to death and unable to remember anything from his past. She nurses him back to health. After a long time of not seeing each other they are reunited but Ash doesn't seem to be the man that Lorelai once knew. While I did like both of the main characters I have to say that I liked them better when they reunited then when they first met. Young Lorelai actually annoyed me a bit. They definitely were more interesting after they had grown and their chemistry became amazing. While I liked the action towards the end I was hoping that the character that turned out the villain at the end would have had a different storyline. But at least I enjoyed how the other characters ended up. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the galley.
