About this audiobook

Star Force pilot and hero Wyatt McCoy left his medals and career behind after the Rim Wars, disillusioned and bitter when he learns the truths behind the conflict. He takes his converted gunship, the Nellie B, and heads to the Near Fringe, salvaging derelict ships and abandoned stations and mining colonies.

Dr. Beth Parker is a space archaeologist, documenting the history of planetary expansion and colonization for Kalok Enterprises and the Interplanetary Mining Guild. A piece of alien technology embeds itself in Beth's arm, giving her the ability to see the energy impressions of long ago people and events. When Beth uncovers proof of genocide that could bring down the big mining companies, she's the target of assassins. Wyatt makes a split-second decision to intervene, launching them both into a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game with some of the most powerful organizations in the system. They can prove Kalok and Interplan killed millions-but can they live long enough to tell their story?

What a fun romp through the questionable parts of space! I really enjoyed Salvage Rat Wyatt. He’s his own boss and he’s not sure he wants to share that job, but the time being he’s tied to Beth, our brainy space archaeologist. I’m a big fan of the TV show Firefly, and this story has echoes of that. The combo of immediate survival and trying to bring down the big bad government agency really worked for me. Wyatt and Beth are forced to blast from one place to the next, uncovering more disturbing facts that point to a larger, wide-spread issue. They have to deal with or evade slavers, paranoid isolationists, paranoid friends, paranoid enemies, danger bots, etc. There is rarely a quiet moment for these two. While I like both characters, we get to know Wyatt a bit more. He’s got this military past that seems simple on the surface, but as Beth eventually learns, it’s got nuances. Yet Wyatt isn’t all about himself, often admiring Beth’s abilities and knowledge even if he sometimes feels his lack of book learning leaves him behind. Then there’s this alien tech that somehow can interface with Beth, showing her recorded memories of past atrocities and tragedies. These can be disturbing but they also supply key info to Beth. I like that her character isn’t a wilting flower, but she’s also a little reserved and doesn’t feel the need to kick ass at the drop of a gender-weighted insult. The ending leaves us with a win but also with plenty of questions for the future of Beth and Wyatt. I definitely look forward to Book 2! 5/5 stars. The Narration: Jeffrey Kafer is one of my favorite male narrators so it was great to have him on this book. He’s got the perfect disgruntled voice for Wyatt and I like his educated but not snotty voice for Beth. His voice for the bot Mac was pretty fun and his gravelly voice for Codger was spot on. Pacing was perfect & there were no technical issues with this recording. 5/5 stars.I received a free copy of this book courtesy of author Larry N. Martin via Audiobookworm Tours. My opinions are wholly my own.
