About this audiobook
A reluctant lady sleuth finds she's investigating her own family.
1881, Sussex. With a drowned husband—the second love lost—an overbearing family, no longed-for child, and the responsibility of a huge baroque mansion, it's not surprising Lady Helena Whitcombe is overwhelmed. When attractive, mysterious, French physician Armand Fortier disturbs her first weeks of mourning with his theory of murder, Helena's reluctant and ineffective attempts at investigation are hardly life-changing—until the resulting revival in her long-abandoned herbalist studies bring her into confrontation with her past and her family's.
Can Lady Helena survive bereavement the second time around? Can she stand up to her six siblings' assumption of the right to control her new life as a widow? And what role will Fortier—who, as a physician, is a most unsuitable companion for an earl's daughter—play in her investigations?
Every family has its secrets. The Scott-De Quincy family has more than most.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Nice representation of the era but waaayyy too long. Deleting some of the ‘floweriness’ and repetition would have tightened it up. But, a gentle book, and the narrator did a reasonable job.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I think overall it was well written, well executed and certainly entertaining. My only gripe was that it was slow listening, or slow reading and seemed to go for ever. Would I recommend it - yes, I would but beg the listener to understand this and be content.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I found the story ok. It was a bit long winded with constant descriptions of the country side and grass and sheep dung. It was ok once one gets past all the unnecessary overly descriptive surroundings. Although enlightening, it distracted from the actual storyline. There were endless paragraphs describing the plants, fauna, sheep dung, etc ...that really weren't required.
I think the story would have flowed better. It was distracting.
Not a series. Just one overly worded story. The story started out very slow for me and at times a bit boring with so much unnecessary details to the surroundings.
Eventually I got to the end and I was glad I finished it.
This book could have finished better, because it left a few things hanging with the future.
Narration was good.
Don't get me wrong, the descriptions were very detailed, but got frustrating when your waiting for the other character to say something in response.
Instead the author detailed the countryside for a few paragraphs before continuing the actual purpose of the story.
Just my opinion of course. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Very graphic with the caesarian too much detail. Poor ending, narrator's over pronounciation is annoying
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent story, modern but true to its setting. I'm glad to have discovered this author and rediscovered Elizabeth Klett, who I have spent many hours listening to via librivox.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I hope there will be more books in this series
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book had so many complex stories within it that all tied together beautifully. I did suspect that Susan had poisoned the father and also that she could somehow have been a half sister to the family.
