About this audiobook

When seventeen-year-old Laurel Harper decides to go live with her estranged father and step-family, she's unaware of the fact that her fate was already sealed the day she was born. She is now exactly where some higher power wants her to be. But it's not until she meets the proud and mysterious Sam Laurens that she feels something strange is going on. Why does he keep interfering in her life? Then Laurel finds out about Sam's ominous ancestry and a whole different fear arises. Fear of who Sam really is. Fear of her own feelings. And when she learns the dark truth about her own future, a sinister secret that will change everything as soon as she turns nineteen, she wants to run and hide, but soon realizes that there is no hiding from fate. Sam may be the only one who can help her escape her destiny, but then she has to start trusting him again, and time is of the essence because he has his own fate to deal with. Still, Sam is determined to stop Laurel from meeting her doom, even if that means he has to make a drastic move that will separate them for good.

This started well, set in Canada - Vancouver Island is a nice change from everything in the world appearing to happen in the United States or Britain and so I read on in a positive frame of mind. I must admit I am a woman in my late 50s and so not the target audience for this novel, however, I am both a mother of a teenager girl who writes fan fiction and a librarian so I qualify on both those counts. The book is written in the first person present which can be difficult to do, and at a couple of significant points the point of view changes from the main female character Laurel to the main male character Sam, whilst still retaining the first person present angle. The plot is quite tight, and you can see that there has been careful plotting especially as the reader is left in the air at the end of the book to have the story carried on in the second, and third book. HOWEVER, and this is my pet peeve, in the second half of the novel the editing gets a little sloppy, typos, and incomplete sentences, as if the novel has been accepted on the basis of the first 20 or so chapters and the rest are not carefully checked. Please remember that no matter what your work is being read by others and your use of language and spelling will influence your readers. I have the second and third books in the series on my 'To buy' list.
