Because murderers are never who you expect…

She was the quiet one… but is she guilty?

For Sarah and husband Heath, the chance to teach at Odell seems like the best thing that ever happened to their small family – a chance to rise through the ranks and put the past behind them.

Until one dark night ends in murder.

But who’s guilty and who’s telling the truth? And who’s been in on it all along…?

I wondered where this was going because the beginning was a little slow but it certainly sped up! I did not see the ending coming---always good in a thriller. I'm glad she has written MORE books...she is a new author for me.

Barely a mystery and I hated all the characters.

This could be a typical young adult novel with the characters behaving in expected ways leading to the expected ending. And it was, but I feel Michele Campbell did a great job keeping the characters from falling into this category.

Twin sisters Rose and Bel Enright couldn't be more different. Rose is serious about her education, she's quiet and isn't as pretty as her sister. Bel is a wild child who runs with a bad crowd at their new school. The Odell School is a prestigious New Hampshire boarding school. This was their chance to start anew after leaving California but nothing's gotten better between the sisters. In fact, things have gotten much worse. Especially when one of them is accused of murdering the other.

Sarah Donovan is the wife of a handsome, charismatic, ambitious teacher who is determined to rise through the ranks. She's trying her best to be happy and supportive but she knows her husband well enough to notice the warning signs. Doesn't she? But surely he's not involved in the murder of a student. Right?

I was sucked in from page one. I love stories about boarding schools with all their drama and secrets and coverups. Which twin was killed?! And why? Does it have anything to do with a certain handsome teacher? Could one twin murder the other? Could another student have done it? There were a few different possibilities that kept me guessing. I found part one very compelling and suspenseful. I was so absorbed in the story that I felt like I was there. But once I got into part two my interest started to wane. I found it repetitious, it dragged on and on. Some things were convenient. And I didn't really care for the ending. Overall though I did enjoy this book.

Thank you to St. Martin’s Press for the invite to read this ARC through Netgalley.

Bel and Rose Enright are fraternal twins who recently lost their mother. They move in with their grandmother until she sends them to Odell Academy, a prestigious boarding school in New England. Rose is instantly enthralled as she is a studious and serious girl. Bel is not happy to be there, until she meets Heath Donovan, her advisor and dorm parent. Bel also gets in with a bad crowd, led by Darcy and Tessa. They encourage Bel to do things that are against school policy. Bel goes along, but due to her infatuation with Heath Donovan, and his reciprocity of this adoration, she gets off easily. Sarah Donovan confronts her husband Heath, but he denies any infidelity. One of the twins turns up dead, and now the police are investigating. You are left to wonder which of the twins is dead for a good part of the novel. Once you discover who died, it is not difficult to know who killed her. But, what is surprising is the epilogue, and who was pulling some of the strings. I thought the book could have been a bit shorter, but I really enjoyed it. #SheWastheQuietOne #MicheleCampbell

As with her first book, It’s Always The Husband, Ms. Campbell weaves a tale that will have you swearing you know what’s going to happen, and feeling pretty proud of yourself. Then, in the last chapter, throw it all out the window. Love the writing style, and detail. This book had great characters....at times you wanted to shake them, yell at them, hug them. So appreciate the details in her writing.

Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for this ARC. All opinions are my own.

Set in an exclusive boarding school, She Was the Quiet One by Michele Campbell is an intriguing murder mystery.

Fifteen year old Bel and Rose Enright are fraternal twins who go to live with their wealthy Grandmother after their mother passes away. Grandma decides to keep with family tradition and she ships the girls off to the Odell School. Free-spirited, fun-loving Bel  is delighted to be selected to join a group of senior girls whose leader Darcy Madden and her sidekick Tessa Romano are the epitome of mean girls. On the other hand, studious and quiet Rose struggles to find her place since Bel humiliated her in front of the other students the first day of school. The girls find themselves of opposite sides of a cruel prank and their relationship further deteriorates until one of them is brutally murdered. Everyone at the school is quick to blame the other twin for killing her sister, but  local Detective Melissa Howard diligently works the case alongside state police Lieutenant Robert Kriscunas.

The Odell School is a savior for newly hired Sarah Donovan and her husband Heath. They are teachers at the school but they are also the co-heads of a dorm that has a terrible reputation for being out of control. Sarah is Rose's adviser and the pair immediately hit it off. Heath is Bel's adviser and he is crucial in helping her when she goes before the disciplinary board for her role in the prank that divides the sisters. Sarah is growing increasingly troubled by rumors and a feeling that something is not quite right with her husband. Heath has his sights set on climbing the academic rung and he is steadily working toward fulfilling his ambitions.

Despite the interesting premise, She Was the Quiet One is a slow-moving mystery that is somewhat predictable. The characters are rather one-dimensional and the plot is ridden with angst. Rose is the most likable character and it is easy to feel sympathy for her as she always plays second fiddle to Bel. As for Bel, she makes one bad decision after another and by the time she is ready to ask for help, she has completely alienated Rose. Sarah is willfully blind to what is going on around her and she plays the hapless wife all too easily as she ignores what is glaringly obvious. Heath is well-liked by the students but he exercises shockingly poor judgment.  Readers will most likely see through the red herrings and accurately guess the killer's identity and motive for the murder fairly easily.  The mystery is solved rather quickly and Michele Campbell completely wraps up all of the loose ends.

This book kept me engaged from beginning to end! It took me only 1 day to read it. I did not want to put it down. I kind of guessing who the murderer was mid way, but, I kept thinking there might be some twists involved. So, as I was reading, I took lots of notes and jotted down all of my thoughts on how things would work out. Very interesting book.A very intense book but not gross or gory. I will be sure to read more from this author in the future.

This book should be designated as YA - the author writes down to that level, and it's very simplistic. The story is populated with bratty, lovelorn, and nasty high school students, a really dumb and deliberately myopic wife to a ridiculously predatory and manipulative husband. The ending was totally predictive. I was surprised that the author, a lawyer and former federal prosecutor, would write such nonsense.

I haven't read Michele Campbell's other book, but I am going to after this one. The short summary of She Was the Quiet One is that there is a murder on the campus of a private New England boarding school. We find that out in the first few pages. There is a set of twins and one of them is dead and the other is being blamed for the murder. The novel changes point of view throughout to get the backstory on the twins, the surrounding cast of characters, interviews with the police, etc.

The story is very compelling and hard to put down. However, it does venture a little on the YA fiction side, given the age of the characters (16) and the "drama" that happens with 16 year old girls at a boarding school. The teenagers were better developed characters than the adults.

The ending was very predictable, right down to cell phones being dead at inopportune times. I was hoping for a twist at the end, but nope, the ending was exactly according to script. Everything was wrapped up at the end (although reality had to be suspended a little bit - are the cops really that naive?).

When their mother dies, twins Rose and Bel move in with their grandmother who they barely know. They are sent to The Odell Academy, a boarding school for the rich kids, where the academic Rose fits right in, but the wilder Bel becomes friends with the popular kids, but the friendship comes with a price. Bel has a crush on Heath Donovan, an ambitious teacher, which sets her against the older popular kids. The book has some Gossip Girl vibes and I have to say that I hated all the characters. I wanted to know what happens but didn’t feel much sympathy for any of the people. The book starts with a murder, but we don’t know who died or who did it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t too difficult to guess who it was, but it takes the cops waay to much time to get it or understand at all what goes on in the school. So much eye-rolling here…It was a solid read, but I had higher hopes for this one.

Twins Bel and Rose start at Odell Academy, a boarding school full of wealth and opportunity, but also temptations and malice. As the sisters choose sides, their relationship, and that of those around them, change for the worse, leading to destruction and tragedy. This book starts out with a lot of suspense. The first few pages pack a real punch, and had me flipping pages to find out what had really happened.I also really liked the use of police interview transcripts. I thought this was a really clever way to hint at what had ended up happening. This book became very predictable for me about 1/3 of the way through. I knew what was going to happen essentially every step of the way, and what did happen seemed very cliched to me.This book wasn't bad, it was an interesting read, but it was far too predictable and cliched. It felt like a subject that had been done before, and done better.

I had heard good things about this book and was excited to get an ARC from NetGalley. However, I was very disappointed once I started reading it. The writing was very simplistic and the characters were one dimensional stereotypes. I figured how who did it pretty easily and there weren't really any surprising twists in the book.

Rose and Bel are twins.  They have recently lost their parents and their grandmother has come into their lives.  She moves them to a boarding school, an exclusive and expensive boarding school in New Hampshire. Soon after they arrive, their rivalry begins.
I am really not a fan of either twin.  They work way too hard to fit in, especially surrounded by all these rich brats. Then, there is Sarah and Heath. They are in charge of the students living in their dorm. Scandal follows theses two all through this story. It reaches beyond a fever pitch. Then....you guessed it...someone is murdered.
I enjoyed this story. The anticipation of who did it and why really keeps you coming back for more. I just really disliked these characters. The girls were whiney and don't get me started on Heath! This read more like a young adult read. But, it does grab you and keep you!I received this novel from St. Martin’s press for a honest review!

I enjoyed this book from the beginning. It is told from various viewpoints and it switches from the past to the present. That sounds confusing when I write it down, but it wasn't in the reading of the book. Bel and Rose are twins attending a privileged private school and are very different people. They share the same trauma in their background and react to it in vastly different ways. The people they meet, the people they befriend, their goals all differ. At the same time, a husband and wife team, teachers in the school, have been named to oversee the students. This is where agendas begin to matter and to emerge. There are twists that you won't expect, and some that you anticipate may not happen. I like being kept on edge when I am reading a thriller and this book delivers. Even when all is said and done, well, all is not exactly said and done. Great writing, good read. I definitely recommend this for psychological thriller fans! This book was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher, and I thank them.

This was my second book by this author and in both instances, I rated the books 5 stars. This one was different from the first book as it took place at a boarding school and the main characters were twins, fraternal twins. They looked nothing alike and they were total opposites of each other. And boy could they fight - they fought about everything.Naturally, being at a boarding school, there are lots of other characters that come into play during this book as well.I really enjoyed reading this book. I was mesmerized by the setting, the characters and the plot twists. Definitely an author that should be on everyone's TBR pile. Thanks to St. Martin's Press and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

“She Was the Quiet One” by Michele Campbell is a captivating, intriguing and intense novel. The Genres for this Novel are Fiction, Mystery, Suspense and Thriller. The timeline for this story is mostly the present and goes back to the past only when it pertains to the characters or events of the story. The setting of the story is mostly in The Odell School, a private, New Hampshire boarding school. The author describes the characters as complex, and complicated. Rose and Bel Enright are fraternal twin sisters that are now orphans, and are sent by their grandmother to The Odell School. Both sisters are as different as night and day. At the prestigious boarding school, there are some groups of students that don’t abide by the rules. The senior students in this group are mean and cruel and bully and belittle the younger students. They have a negative attitude and a feeling of entitlement. .One of the sisters is immediately accepted into this group, even though she is younger. This strains the relationship with the other twin. What is even worse, is that this group is determined to alienate both sisters from each other. The school has hired the Donovans, both teachers with young children to supervise and help control the bad influence and character at the school. Mr. Donovan has a magnetic and charismatic personality, and the students love him. Mrs. Donovan is more reserved. They have hidden past secrets. Mr. Donovan’s goal is to be the Headmaster of the school, and he is extremely ambitious. Many of the characters are suspicious. There are twists and turns, betrayals and lies. Some of the characters are ambitious, jealous, insecure, and unbalanced. Everything is not what it seems to be, and everyone is not who they seem to be. All these factors lead to disaster and tragedy.I would recommend this edgy novel for those readers who enjoy suspenseful mysteries and thrillers. I received an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.

I won an advanced copy from Goodreads FirstReads in exchange for a review.I chose to read this book because I liked the description. Books set in boarding schools, especially historic ones, intrigue me. Maybe it’s the atmospheric mood. After losing both their parents, twins Rose and Isabel(“Bel”) Enright are, reluctantly, adopted by their wealthy paternal grandmother. She, in turn, enrolls them in the prestigious Odell Academy. While Rose feels grateful and excited, Bel hates it on sight. This differing attitude is not the only thing that sets them apart. Rose and Bel are opposites in every way and their individual styles reflect that. They look nothing alike. Rose is blonde, pleasing but plain. She is pragmatic and plays by the rules. Bel is a raven-haired beauty with a wild streak and questionable judgment. Yet, despite of these contrasts, they are very close and love each other(deep down, anyway). It doesn’t take long at all for their relationship to sour. The very first day of school, they are separated, in more ways than one. Their sibling rivalry takes on a life of its own, leading to frequent conflicts, cold wars, and ultimately...murder.I was hooked from the start. Campbell’s writing style is very readable, with vivid descriptions. Her characterizations are true-to-life and she is up-to-date on current social media trends. Each chapter is written, in the third person, from alternating perspectives of the primary characters. Interspersed within, are witness interviews. Married couple and alumni, Sarah and Heath Donovan, are the dorm heads of notorious Moreland, where Rose and Bel are assigned. Sarah and Heath are teachers(math and English respectively) and the advisors assigned to the twins. While Sarah is more girl next door, Heath is strikingly handsome and the heartthrob of the Odell female population, including Bel, his student and advisee.Overall, I loved this book. The plot was compelling, the characters were well-developed, and the ending plausible and satisfying. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Loved it!!! I became a fan of the author after reading and loving "It's Always the Husband." Right from the start you know one twin is dead and the other is locked up in the infirmary for being the killer. Of course I was hooked from the start!!I was immediately drawn into the story and felt like I was actually at the school with Bel, Rose and the Donovans. The twins are sent to the boarding school by their grandma after the death of their mother. Rose and Bel are completely different from each other. Rose loves school and follows the rules. Bel makes friends with a group of seniors who are known more for making trouble than good grades. These girls even start a contest to see who can be the first to sleep with Donovan, the new dorm parent. There was also a slipper attack. The victims ended up being treated worse than the actual attackers. The way Rose's grandma treated her after the slipper incident was horrible. The twins never seem to make up properly and Bel doesn't seem to take the blame for any part she plays. Bel's secret relationship on campus doesn't help. I wasn't a big fan of either twin. I loved Sarah and how she was able to finally figure everything out while suffering through the flu. Loved the ending.I enjoyed the story and writing style. Some of the characters were just horrible people, which did make for a great book. Heath made my skin crawl and I knew from the beginning he would be trouble. Zach was also another creepy character. I was happy when Rose's grandma got rid of her awful lawyer, Warren. I never guessed who was really behind anonymouse. I actually thought it was someone else and was surprised it wasn't. I definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading more by the author. Thanks to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press and the author, Michele Campbell, for a free electronic ARC of this novel.
