- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I tried reading this book during the holidays of 2020 and just could not get into it, so I set it aside. In hindsight, it was not the fault of the book but the mood I was in. I came back to it this holiday season (December 2021) and enjoyed it. It does start a bit slow, but once I got to know each of the sisters I hooked. I liked how the author showed used one tragic event to intertwine all the characters. The feelings of guilt and inadequacies seemed so real and touch me.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5if you are looking for a light, fun, Christmas story I have to tell you that this is not it. In fact, it's not even a Christmas story...it's only set around the Christmas season. I didn't care for the sisters and how they treated each other...nor did I care for Luke. On second thought they all deserved one another. The story was mostly about the tragedy they experienced and how it affected them. The dog was nice though and I'm sure the Scottish countryside was beautiful.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Okay, first of all, let's talk about that cover!
Seriously experiencing some walking-in-a-winter-wonderland feelings here, and it's literally about 95 degrees where I'm at, so that's saying something. Seriously though, isn't it beautiful? I can just picture walking amidst the trees, ooh-ing and aah-ing at all the fairy lights, as the snow gently falls all around. *sigh* Such a beautiful setting, and that's even before we get to the MAGICAL story within.
Now when I say "magical", I don't mean in the literal sense here...it's not HP, there's no wizard going to come forth and tell a big scary that they "shall not pass", or any other fantasy type adventure you may have conjured. The MAGIC here is coming straight from the heart. It's about the relationships between friends, families, and lovers, the past hurts to be carried and the future blessings to come, the strength of heart it takes to move forward from tragedy, and the strength of character it requires to ask for a helping hand. Now let's take it character by character for a sec...
Hannah...eldest sister, carrier of many past woes, harboring feelings of inadequacy, while dealing with an unexpected surprise. Beth...middle child, overprotective mom to the umpteenth degree, and former businesswoman looking to have it all. Posy...youngest sister, free spirited much like her parents though without the reckless streak, able to take life as it comes, but always holding something of her self back. We can't forget Suzanne and Stewart, the heart and soul of this family unit. To hear their story, how this family came to be a family, and the tragedy that set it all in motion...it makes your heart warm, your smile grow, and your understanding of the depth of their love reach new heights. Seriously, you couldn't ask for a better pair, and I love that we had the chance to get to know them as well.
Suffice it to say that it was DEFINITELY another win for this wonderful author, and a book I'll be recommending for the coming season and beyond.
**copy received for review - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It took me a while to get into this book. Suzanne, Cheryl, Rob, and the Palmers went climbing and only Suzanne survived. (Based on her nightmares, I'm guessing there was an avalanche.) Suzanne then decided to parent Cheryl's and Rob's three girls. After Suzanne and Stewart get married, they all move to Scotland.Hannah is the oldest girl and as such, remembers the most about her parents. Hannah remembers that her father's life revolved around climbing, something she was not good at, so she never felt like she measured up. Hannah prefers books. She also prefers to be organized and in control, and she keeps herself apart from others so there's less risk of her getting hurt. But now she thinks she may be pregnant, and a baby definitely wasn't in her five year plan!Beth is the middle girl. She's the only one of the three who's married. She and her husband, Jason, have two girls. Beth is quite overprotective. Beth's been a stay at home mom and her patience is wearing thin. She thinks she wants to go back to work at the same time her husband is thinking about having a third child. (Talk about two vastly different goals!) Posy is the youngest girl. She's got a natural ability for climbing. She's stayed near home in Scotland because she values family loyalty. It's just assumed that she'll take over the cafe from Suzanne one day. But Posy's intrigued with a writer-border Luke who invites her to climb Denali with him. It's a story of family love--but the family doesn't always get along with each other or agree with each other. There are lessons that have to be learned. You can't be responsible for someone else's happiness or their choices (particularly once they become adults). You don't always get what you want when you want it. Sometimes it's better to talk about things than to bottle them up/try to deal with them on your own. There are times forgiveness needs to be offered.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I know what you might be thinking, dear reader. It's far too early to be reading a Christmas book. And I would be inclined to agree with you-it's not even Halloween yet! However, the temptation to read another Sarah Morgan romance novel outweighed the holiday timing principles. Make no mistake: I will be reading this again during the holiday season. It was that charming and magical. This is a story mostly about three sisters: Posy, Hannah, and Beth. These three sisters each have very tricky relationships with each other, with their adopted parents, and with their respective significant others. Each one is also trying to overcome their own significant hurdle in their lives but all things come back to the one fateful night that their parents died in an avalanche years ago just a days before Christmas. That night has not only impacted their lives, but also the lives of those who would come to know and love them afterwards. How can they move forward 25 years later when that night comes back to haunt them every Christmas?Sarah Morgan is easily my favorite author. Every book she writes has characters that are authentic, complex, and hard-working. In this book, each sister handled the traumatic experience of their parents' death differently. Yet each sister needed to rely on the other in order to overcome it many years later. Each sister had their own mountain to climb but learning to work together rather than only relying on their own self made it easier to face. I seem to have a problem choosing my favorite character in each book Sarah Morgan writes. In this book, I choose Stewart. Stewart and Suzanne took in the three orphaned sisters and raised them as their own. Stewart is the calm yet adventurous, quiet yet funny, father figure that we honestly could all use. I found him to be incredibly endearing and entertaining.I would recommend this book for all adult readers, regardless of the time of year, as it pulls you into the Scottish Highlands and takes you to new heights. I would also note that there is a big surprise about 70% into the book that changes everything. On the other hand, I would not recommend this book for readers who do not enjoy or may be triggered by parental death, grief, mild foul language, or sexually suggestive scenarios. Please note: an Advanced Reader Copy of this book was generously provided for free by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
