About this audiobook
The new standalone novel from bestselling author Jasper Fforde
Every Winter, the human population hibernates.
During those bitterly cold four months, the nation is a snow-draped landscape of desolate loneliness, devoid of human activity.
Well, not quite.
Your name is Charlie Worthing and it's your first season with the Winter Consuls, the committed but mildly unhinged group of misfits who are responsible for ensuring the hibernatory safe passage of the sleeping masses.
You are investigating an outbreak of viral dreams which you dismiss as nonsense; nothing more than a quirky artefact borne of the sleeping mind.
When the dreams start to kill people, it's unsettling.
When you get the dreams too, it's weird.
When they start to come true, you begin to doubt your sanity.
But teasing truth from the Winter is never easy: You have to avoid the Villains and their penchant for murder, kidnapping, and stamp collecting, ensure you aren't eaten by Nightwalkers, whose thirst for human flesh can only be satisfied by comfort food, and sidestep the increasingly less-than-mythical WinterVolk.
But so long as you remember to wrap up warmly, you'll be fine.
Editor's Note
Fast-paced & fun…
“Early Riser” is a romping mystery set against the backdrop of a wintry wasteland. Reminiscent of a Coen brothers movie or Douglas Adams, Jasper Fforde’s book was one I couldn’t put down and never wanted to end. It’s fast-paced, fun, and thoroughly satisfying.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was a book that had wonderful premise, vivid imagination and quite quirky and humor-filled character. Often times I found myself as confused as the main protagonist, and that partially hindered my enjoyment of this book. But I must say I really enjoyed the whole process, however long it took. The voice acting was excellent and that helped me pace the book more than just me reading with the physical copy of the book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved the plot. The dialogues, and monologues were thoughtful, introspective, and riddled with humor. The curiosity of this new, yet familiar universe, made for fewer breaks than I had anticipated. I just kept listening! The narrator was so engaged, it made me feel like he was truly apart of the story as the range of voices, accents, and raw personality shined. Brilliant novel, brilliant characters, and a few surprises I encourage you to discover for yourself. Highly recommend. I have read (and listened to) many sci-fi/ fantasy books. From the greats to the unknowns. This has potential to be one of the greats. Won't be surprised if this makes it to the screen one way or the other.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Intriguing and intriguing, stayed up late just to read it! I really loved this book
