About this audiobook

She lied to me.

The minute I see Gavin for the first time, I know he is mine. Piper told him his daddy was in jail.

I should be angry with her. But with that stethoscope draped around her neck, I know she's not as bad as I want her to be. She was just trying to protect him. From my life, my club, and the bastards that are trying to kill us.

She has every reason to be worried, but no one will touch my son. Or my girl.

She may have left before, but this time, I know she'll stay. Because we both want the same thing. A family.

Contains mature themes.

well what do you know, it's time for the one brother that talks the most noise, "Rock". First of all, I have to say, I'm so excited that this book quite literally picked up where "Brewer" left off. In the hospital, only they were trying to find out why Brewer had the reaction he did and went unconscious. I'm on the edge of my seat because for the first time, I already know. Brewer knows who the rat is and I'm ready for him to tell it. Don't get too excited, SR dragged that part out a bit, to get into Rock's story. Rock's backstory explains what happened when he was a prospect and why he took the fall for Brewer and went to jail all those years ago. SR is always really detailed about the backstories and how they relate to the series and I love that. In his past though he also met a woman and spent the summer with her before getting locked up. She was trying to decide what she wanted to major in college and just needed to relax. She was born and raised in Redding so surprise surprise when she moves back and is now an ER doctor. That is not the only shocker. I love these little plot twists. They make me giggle. Of course the rat is still running around and knows that since Brewer is out of commission, Rock is the next option to go into jail and take care of Rex. Next thing you know Rock is in their sights. This book becomes really fast paced as Rock deals with the club issues and with his past coming back. It's nonstop and so much fun to read. I loved it.

... a solid addition to the Highland Guard seriesThe fairytale was not going to come true. No matter how hard he tries, even when he climbs up into the princess's tower, Thomas MacGowan learns early on that Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of Lord Douglas can never be for him. Childhood friends, Thom the son of the castle blacksmith is smitten by Elizabeth right from when she was just a wee young thing who trailed around behind him and her brother Jamie.Rejected, Thom joins Bruce's army still dreaming that he might one day be in a position to offer for Elizabeth.Meantime, Elizabeth has outgrown childhood fancies and is determined to marry for position and power. When her younger brother is imprisoned by the English, Elizabeth asks Thom, who has the uncanny ability to climb sheer rock faces, to attempt his rescue.Thom's talent brings him to the attention of Bruce's secret army--The Highland Guards, but will this bring him to Elizabeth's attention? Oh, Thom has Elizabeth's womanly attention despite her rationality--something she fights hard. Given the secret name of The Rock, Thom is revealed as so much more--solid, unwavering and committed. Indeed Thom's skill was to be a turning point in Bruce's plans for overthrowing the English and in taking Roxburg and Edinburg castles. MacCarty's expose on the hierarchy in the society of the times is fascinating. I love her attention to detail.I really liked Thom. I actually wondered if Elizabeth was worthy of him. Fortunately Thom thought she was. I will admit to being frequently out of charity with Elizabeth. Sure I understand her reasoning (given her childhood insecurities). She leads Thom and herself a merry dance as she fights her desire for wealth and position over love.Initially this story didn't for me quite have the verve of others in the series, but as the story unfolded it revealed itself as an interesting addition, both frustrating and yet complex, different and immensely enjoyable.A NetGalley ARC

I've read all the H. Guard stories and this one is a little different, and I liked it very much.Thom is the son of a blacksmith but had spent a good part of his youth with the Lord of Douglas' young son Jaime and his sister Elizabeth. They were parted as the children were sent to live elsewhere. Thom never forgot Elizabeth and his love for her grew, but Jaime becomes the new Lord of Douglas and now see's Thom far below them in ranking. He has no chance of a marriage with Elizabeth. Thom is heart broken. The opportunity to join Bruce's army arrives and he takes it. He hopes he'll be able to raise himself, make himself a better prospect - if not maybe forget her. This was a good story. Thom's struggle was heart rending. I didn't like Elizabeth much, with out giving too much away, she was very obtuse and a little selfish. There's a lot of thrills and suspense in the plot. I wanted to bop Elizabeth a time or two and shake Thom. But all in all I loved the book and highly recommend it. 5/5
