Reviews for Relationship Magic, Waking up Together
3 ratings2 reviews
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Besides a few good tips here and there, this book overall lacks substance and builds its theories upon itself with baseless assumptions. Most of what Finley thinks is based on a random range of idioms, religions, physics (why?!), movies ("you complete me" is his evidence in one chapter...seriously), "experience proves this true", whatever "celestial truths/laws" are, stereotypes, and made-up stories. Unfortunately, he spends a tremendous amount of time simply trying to prove that what he is saying is "true" but without actually providing any adaquete evidence -- which is probably why it sounds like he's rambling for most of the book.
Furthermore, Finley continously refers to an odd binary view of the univerise, divided things into "higher" and "lower" catagories of intellect, emotion, gender, actions, communication, and everything else. He then uses that category that he assigned to something as proof that it is what you should do to improve your relationship.
Most of the book is filled with bad advice that can cause you to stay in, at best, incompatible relationships, and at worst, abusive relationships. If you're looking for more researched-based educational relationship and life changing advice, I highly advise you to listen to "Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents" or just google "attachment styles" to find out the source of like, 97% of your interpersonal conflicts.
I had high hopes for this book and it really let me down -- but for the right demographic, this book could actually be helpful. If you're retired, religious, always fighting with your SO, and prefer the term "common sense" over "thoroughly researched", then you might actually enjoy this book!1 person found this helpful
