About this audiobook

The Martian meets Interstellar in the new sci-fi thriller from A.G. Riddle, the worldwide bestselling author with over FOUR MILLION COPIES SOLD and translations in two dozen languages. * * * A new ice age on Earth. A mysterious object in space. And a desperate mission to save humanity from extinction. * * * Each month, Earth grows colder. Snow falls in summer. Glaciers trample cities across North America, Europe, and Asia. Chaos erupts. Around the world, people abandon their homes, fleeing the cold, flocking to regions where they can survive the new ice age. Nations prepare to go to war for the world's last habitable zones. NASA and other scientific organizations search for answers. Why is the world cooling when they expected it to grow warmer? They send probes into the solar system to collect readings. Out there, in the dark expanse of space, they find something no one expected: a mysterious object, drifting toward the sun. Could it be responsible for the new ice age? And if so, can we stop it? Or is the artifact merely an observer? Or neither? Could it be a relic from a long-extinct civilization? One thing is certain: investigating the object is humanity's best hope of survival. As the ice age claims more lives and the world slides into anarchy, an international consortium launches a mission into space to study the object and make contact. But the first contact mission doesn't go as planned. What the crew discovers out there is beyond anyone's imagination. Two members of the first contact mission may hold the keys to humanity's salvation. Dr. Emma Matthews is the commander aboard the International Space Station. For months, she has watched the world below freeze and civilization unravel. The headlines tell only half of the story. The messages from her sister tell the rest, of a world witnessing mass migrations, fighting for survival, struggling to provide a future for their children. When a catastrophe strikes the ISS, Emma faces her own fight for survival. Dr. James Sinclair is one of the greatest scientists alive. A mind before his time. Years ago, he invented something with the potential to change the world--an invention that would upset the balance of power in the world forever. Fearing that change, his enemies sent him to prison for a crime he didn't commit. But with humanity's future at stake, NASA asks him to join the first contact mission. His expertise is vital to the mission's success--and to saving Emma. With the clock ticking down to humanity's final days on Earth, James makes a decision that will change his life forever and may determine the fate of the entire human race. * * * Praise for A.G. What do you call a book the main character of which is held to be the smartest person of all time but who shows little sign of above average intelligence and the main action of which is a love story? A romance novel. Not what I was hoping for.

It took me two weeks to get through the book, as I found it incredibly boring.

Generally I enjoy books in this genre. Winter World even presents an original and interesting idea and could have been great, if not let down by poor dialogue and stupid decision-making by the characters.

Where do I begin? The fact that the story is written from two perspectives, those of the protagonists, James and Emma? It reads like a screenplay and limits the story's development.

The other major issue I had was how stupid, selfish and boring these two characters were. Emma was the commander of the International Space Station and James is supposedly one of the brightest minds on the planet. However, their personal feelings get in the way of decision-making. For example, they have to travel into space again to save mankind, Emma insists on going along as she couldn't bear to be without James while he is off saving the world. She is very unhealthy, but ends up going, probably taking the spot of someone who probably would have been of more use on the mission.

Oh, and then there is James's "big" secret. It gets build up throughout the book with the author constantly teasing (irritating?) you with it, but not disclosing it till right at the end. This was just juvenile. Come on, I thought we left this rubbish behind in the 90's. When the reveal eventually happened, I didn't care any longer. It was such a letdown anyway. I was expecting something significant, but it turned out to be a fart in a thunderstorm. It was comparable to promising your loved one the holiday of their dreams, constantly reminding them off it, and then taking them to the local motel down the road.

There are two more books in the series, but I won't waste my time. I'm scared the next reveal will be something as huge as James eventually (after 95% into the book) admitting to Emma that he stole his brother's lunch money when he was ten. I don't know if I could deal with such a heartbreaking situation.

I also didn't particularly enjoy the narration, especially the person reading Emma's parts.

This is Dan Brown meets Carl Sagan's Contact. It's not too bad and the premise is ok as long as you can withstand a fair amount of eye rolls.

Great book. Crazy story. What's so scary is that we can truly imagine something like this happening.

It started out really strong, but somewhere after the first quarter it looses a lot of its pace... I listened until I had 2 hours left but I am so bored that I probably don't end it. So far there where no surprises and everything was really foreseeable. That is a shame because the beginning was very enticing and got me so exited.

Also, what's with the authors obsession with sodacans? They are used as a metaphor in at least three different occasions: Either someone feels like they are in a can of soda or they build a can of soda... heck, they even ARE the can of soda ... Why? Why soda? Someone tell me! I'm so confused.

It was ok for a change. A little too much technical jargon for me but still interesting.

This was a great listen! Very likeable characters, causing vested suspense for me.
    The narration was, also, great.
The storyline was very interesting for me, though I suspect that for those of you smarter than myself, there'll be grumblings of predictability.
For the feminist me, I was acutely aware that the protagonists' partner was heavy handedly weiten as dumber, even though she somehow managed to have been a Commander on the I.S.S. before having met him? Eye-roll stereotypes abound.
In spite of that, it was still a very engaging 'page-turner' for me, and I'm looking forward to the sequel, "Solar War"

I normally listen to a couple chapters of a book and then go to sleep the first day I had this book I listen to 30 some chapters over half the book almost I couldn’t get enough, I am super glad that there is a second and a third book to go along with this I can’t wait to dive into the second one the solar war.

A Book about Aliens and their attempt to kill humans... not too bad at parts, tedious at some points and a bit of a stretch as to how they sap the solar power..

Is energy is the most precious commodity in the universe? If you believe a mysterious entity known only as “the Grid” that seems to travel throughout the galaxy collecting the energy of stars that would be true. According to the ‘Grid”, energy must be conserved and used with the greatest efficiency. And so the grid began harvesting the energy produced by Earth’s star, Sol. Earth became an icy snowball; humans, an endangered species.Dr. James Sinclair, a trained physician and roboticist, is elected by NASA to deal with the Grid to the disgust of his arch enemy, egotist, manipulator and fellow roboticist, Dr. Richard Chandler. Combining talents with Emma, the endangered commander of the International Space Station, another roboticist and a Russian Cosmonaut, James undertakes the task of first contact, in a hostile environment, with an advance alien intelligence determined to harvest the energy of our sun and drive mankind extinct.Along the line, James encounters love, physical debilitation, assaults by his detractors and the pressure of being the last hope for the human race. Is he smart enough, determined enough and strong enough to pull it off? Can the human race bring enough material, effort and technology to bear on the problem to defeat the “Harvester”? These questions will keep readers of Winter World up through the night turning page after page. A great read for any sci-fi, action adventure and apocalyptic fans.
