About this audiobook
John Foley
John Foley is a high school teacher in Washington State. He previously worked as a newspaper reporter in the Chicago suburbs and Alaska, covering sports, cops, features and any other beat that didn't require him to attend sanitary sewer meetings. Following a career change to teaching, he worked in Alaskan villages for several years, which led to his memoir Tundra Teacher. Hoops of Steel is based in part on his experiences as a basketball player. Foley was second string on the junior varsity at a Division III school, but prefers to simply say that he "played college ball."

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It is excellent but I am saddened you don't have a continuation of the course
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It was excellent! George’s French learning adventure and his relationship with other characters are just so realistic and heartwarming. Highly recommend it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This series is actually almost identical as the one I used when learning Spanish (also made by Linguaphone). The plot and dialog are the same, only in French! I have found the French version equally as helpful and with its own distinct lessons pertinent to French culture.
It's entertaining, funny at parts, easy to understand, and easy to listen to for hours. The audiobook presents a single continuing story in short dialogues, then discusses the vocabulary and expressions between each scene. Although the fictional story is fairly stereotypical for a language-learning book (a business traveler prepares for a business expo abroad, having to learn French along the way), they put a few unexpected twists that create suspense and intrigue. The characters are very human and relatable, and acted well. Other similar audiobooks are either repetitive, or too boring, or aren't able to hook you in. This one though is worth listening to from beginning to end, you'll learn a lot!4 people found this helpful
