About this audiobook
A LOCUS AWARD FINALIST FOR BEST NOVELLA
Fix the past. Save the present. Stop the future. Master of science fiction Alastair Reynolds unfolds a time-traveling climate fiction adventure in Permafrost.
2080: at a remote site on the edge of the Arctic Circle, a group of scientists, engineers and physicians gather to gamble humanity’s future on one last-ditch experiment. Their goal: to make a tiny alteration to the past, averting a global catastrophe while at the same time leaving recorded history intact. To make the experiment work, they just need one last recruit: an ageing schoolteacher whose late mother was the foremost expert on the mathematics of paradox.
2028: a young woman goes into surgery for routine brain surgery. In the days following her operation, she begins to hear another voice in her head... an unwanted presence which seems to have a will, and a purpose, all of its own – one that will disrupt her life entirely. The only choice left to her is a simple one.
Does she resist ... or become a collaborator?

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Read most of his work. Up there with his best.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5“Nobody thinks it matters anymore,” I said. “Education. Giving those girls and boys a chance. And in a way I understand. What’s the point, if all they’ve got to look forward to is gradual starvation or a visit to the mobile euthanisation clinics? But we know. We know there’s a chance, even if it’s only a small one.”
The setting is in Russia and there is an international team that is gathered for a time-travelling project lead by WHO’s dr Cho, who found a way to send back in time, 58 years before the D day, a few persons who can help with saving plant seeds, thus overriding the destruction scenario.
The main character is a senior lady, who has the privilege of becoming time embedded among the first ones. She does’ t know what to expect and how to behave, the whole time travelling experiment is just uncharted territory, but she uses her wisdom to find the way forward. She is not a scientist, not a pilot, not a fighter... just a former teacher, now a senior citizen... what an unusual world saver!
She finds out that her conscience connects with another's person's conscience from the past, a young lady and she, as she understands how this connections happens, she tries to do this in a very respectful and considerate manner, so that the host does not think as going mad. She progressively learns, together with the reader, what moving upstream and downstream time means, and how paradoxes might appear. All is nice in theory, but when consequences appear, some costing lives, then manipulating the paradoxes becomes a not only a possibility, but an emergency.
All in all, the story is fresh and the drama is there, it is more a psychological thriller than one based on action. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I m an avid reader/listener (when short on time) and although I'm not picky, rarely do I feel like I had been fully immerced in another world, another life; Both writer and narrator did that with this book. I was left very satisfied with the story.
I can't wait to read more from this Author. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I like how it jumped perspective and kept you guessing
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Perhaps slightly longer than it needed to be but well written and entertaining!
