He holds a master of divinity degree summa cum laude from San Francisco Theological Seminary and a PhD degree from the University of California, Berkeley. The founder of two schools, World College West and Presidio Graduate School, he was married for seventy years to Catherine Hammond Gray until she died in 2013.
