The Reckoning, an investigation of the murder of Christopher Marlowe, won the James Tait Black Prize for biography and the Crime Writers’ Association ‘Gold Dagger’ for non-fiction. His other books include an acclaimed biography of Leonardo da Vinci; a reconstruction of a sixteenth-century expedition in search of El Dorado; and the travel classic Borderlines, set in 1980s Thailand (also published by Eland) and The Fruit Palace, about life among the drug-smugglers of Colombia. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and an Honorary Professor at the University of Sussex.view less
