From Primary school he won a scholarship to Colaiste Einde, in Galway where he obtained his secondary education through Gaeilge, the native language of Ireland. Third level followed in St Patrick’s Training College for teachers in Dublin.
Writing in those days was in Gaeilge and he was a frequent contributor to the Irish Monthly ‘Inniu’. In 1963 he was the outright winner of a competition open to those who had already been published in the paper during the year. Right through his college days he was keenly interested in music and singing. He was a member of the College choir and in 1966 was a member of the RTE choral society until he left Dublin to take up his first appointment as a teacher near Swinford in the West of Ireland.
He had taught himself to play guitar and now together with two friends he formed a ballad group. They played in venues all over the West of Ireland and on occasion in places further afield in Dublin and in Birmingham. He married in 1970 and has two children.
He has maintained his interest in music down the years and is known to take part in the occasional session to this day. He spent many years researching and learning French cuisine and wines and in 1996 opened a top quality restaurant with his wife Myra in Swinford. To this day many of its clients remark that it was ahead of its time. His other lifelong interests are literature and the visual arts, freshwater fishing and blue water sailing.
Having retired from teaching in 2002 he moved to Westport in Co. Mayo. ‘The Best Laid Schemes’ was begun in 2007 and finished three years later. He is currently working on his second novel.view less
