I write the Dermot O’Hara Mysteries under the pen name ‘Michael McDonnell’, a combination of my own name and my mother’s maiden name. Friends, enemies and relatives know me as Mial Pagan – (‘Mial’ being a result of a childhood friend saying ‘Michael’ very fast). Originally from Belfast I now live in St Albans, just north of London. My professional career began as a Drama Therapist working in hospitals and day centres around London. I moved into I.T. and eventually started writing articles for business magazines. Now you may be thinking that this is a slightly cavalier approach to career planning and you’re not alone... One despairing school careers adviser came to the conclusion, as he surveyed my abysmal maths, science and history but reasonable English results, that writing might be a good (he was too polite to say ‘only’) choice. After a delay of a few decades I took his advice...
I’ve also written two plays, ‘Other People’s Lives’ and ‘Dancehall Sweethearts’ which have been produced at the Abbey Theatre. My comedy screenplay, ‘Paradise Place’ (if you liked ‘Shaun of the Dead’ I think you’ll enjoy this) is in production on location at the moment and will be released in early 2014.view less
