His book "W Polsce" (In Poland) was published in Warsaw by the anti-Communist underground in 1981. In 1984 it was awarded the Koscielski Prize. In 2010 it was republished in post-Communist Poland.
In 1981 he moved from Poland to France and then on to New York then Montana and then Seattle.

In 1990 he wrote "Lubark," a novella in English, for which he received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1991 the Ucross Foundation invited him to Wyoming. Afterwards, he has spent two decades living in the American Northwest. The new Polish book "Do Wyoming," a road story, draws on that experience. The English version, "To Wyoming." appeared in March 2014.
