He specialises in road racing, with stunning successes in all the major events including the Isle of Man TT, the North West 200, and the Ulster and Macau Grands Prix. His record-breaking five-win TT in 2010 was followed almost immediately by a devastating crash. However, his determination to rescue his career through a marathon injury-recovery programme personified his Yorkshire grit, and has been hailed as an example of triumph over adversity. At the TT in 2015 he won three races, and a year later won three more, going on to score three more wins and a record lap in the Ulster GP.
The ex-mechanic turned novice racer made his debut at the Manx Grand Prix in September 2003, over the same 37¾-mile course as the TT, winning the Newcomers’ Race and the trophy that goes with it. Hutchy’s subsequent journey up the rankings has been remarkable, to such an extent that in January 2016 the Royal Automobile Club awarded him the coveted Torrens Trophy for his ‘outstanding determination and courage in overcoming adversity to win multiple TT races.’ As double world Superbikes Champion James Toseland, another proud recipient of the trophy, said: ‘I can’t imagine anybody deserves this award more than Hutchy. He is a TT legend in his own right.’view less
