One of the most important writers for children in Bosnia and Herzegovina, since February 1993 he has lived with his family in Slovenia, in Ilirska Bistrica, but is very much present in the literary life of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo (Literature Department) and worked as a journalist, editor and editor-in-chief in the newspaper and publishing department of »Glas« in Banjaluka. He has published more than 30 books, including »Jutro tate Mrguda« (The Morning of the Frowning Father), »Klupa kraj prozora« (A Bench Next to the Window), »Otac s kisobranom« (Father with an Umbrella), »Radnicka cetvrt« (Workers' Square), »Ocevo breme« (Father's Worry), »Ocev kaput« (Father's Coat), »Djecije nebo« (Children's Sky) »Izgubljeni kliker« (The Lost Marble), »Jesen u gradu« (Autumn in the City), »Kraljica lutka« (The Doll Queen), »Pjesma se javlja« (A Poem Coming Up), and the plays »Noc kad su neboderi setali« (The Night the Skyscrapers Walked), »Krojac Djeda Mraza« (Santa Claus's Tailor) and »Djeca i lutke« (The Children and the Dolls); a book of stories from his childhood »Pijetlov budilnik« (The Cockrel's Alarm Clock); a collection of fairy tails »Drveni konjic« (The Wooden Horse), the title story of which has been translated and published in English; and the newest book of poems and stories "Patuljci se uvijek vracaju" (Dwarves Always Come Back). His books and poems have been translated into English, French, German, Russian, Italian, Slovenian, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Polish, Czech, Turkish, Albanian, and Macedonian. Bekric also translates books, including a large number of children's books by Slovenian authors: an anthology of Slovenian poetry for children published in Slovenian and the languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina, »Kazipot za vsepovsod«/«Kaziput za svaki kut« (A Sign Post for Every Corner); Dragotin Kette: »Cuj sanje mi« (Listen to My Dreams, poetry), Dragotin Kette: »Zimska romanca« (Winter Romance, poems for children and youth); Srecko Kosovel: »Otrok s soncnico«/«Dijete sa suncokretom« (A Child with a Sunflower, poetry for young people); Srecko Kosovel: »Soncnica na rami«/«Suncokret na ramenu« (The Sunflower on the Shoulder, poetry for young people and poems from the author's birthplace Kras); Boris A. Novak: »Bajka putuje u svijet« (A Fairy Tale Travelling into the World, children's poems); Manja Zugman Sirnik: Izsevanja/Zarenja (Glistening Reflexions, poetry).Bekric's work has been published in numerous anthologies and school text books.For his literary achievements over many years he has received domestic and international awards, including »Veselin Maslesa Award«, »Zmajeva Award«, »Alpe Adria Award«, »Rijeci bez granica« (Words without Borders Award) in Italy (for a bilingual book of poems »Cipele starijeg brata/Cevlji starejsega brata« (The Older Brother's Shoes), published in Ljubljana, (translated into Slovenian by Milan Dekleva); the annual award by Bosanska rijec »Mali princ« (the Little Prince Award); »Stazama djetinjstva Award« (On the Roads of Childhood), »Skender Kulenovic Award«; the regional »Princ djecijeg carstva Award« (the Prince of the Children's Empire); he received the International Book Fair Award in Sarajevo for the best book for children: a collection of stories and poems "Patuljci se uvijek vracaju« (Dwarves Always Come Back, 2015). He has been nominated for the prestiguous international »Astrid Lindgren« award. He is a member of the Association of Writers in BiH as well as PEN, and Udruzenje knjizevnikov Primorske (the Association of Writers from Primorska).view less
