Born in Ladismith, Cape Town, South Africa in 1906, he married Patricia Gwenyth (Kolbe) Crafford in Cape Town in 1936. Together the couple had one daughter. In addition to his biography on Jan Smuts (1943), Crafford was also the author of The Latin Student’s Vade Mecum (with J. H. K. Vivier, 1941), The Sanguine Years, 1870-1919 (1944) and The Place of Dragons (1964). He died in Cape Town in 1986, aged 80.view less
