CONCLUSION
INTRODUCTION
A VISION MOTIVATED BY LOVE
The Bible demonstrates and communicates the importance of vision more clearly than any book that has ever been written. It is a book of vision. The entire Bible is about God's vision. It portrays the love of our everlasting heavenly Father whose plan and purpose has always been for all men, women and children of every age, race and culture in the entire world to know Him.
Knowing God begins when a person puts their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ: God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16. God's vision for mankind is motivated by His love. The desire of God's heart is for everyone to experience His love, to enjoy His presence, to receive His help in fulfilling His plans and purposes on earth and to spend eternity with Him when our natural lives ends.
God's 'big picture' never changes
When we read the Bible, we discover what has already come to pass concerning the outworking of the vision. It also enables us to know what is still to take place. God communicated His Word through divine inspiration, which was documented for us by faithful scribes. Though it spans thousands of years from Genesis to Revelation, God's vision never changes. It always remains exactly the same.
It's what I call God's 'big picture', His overall plan and purpose for mankind. Everything God has ever done, is doing and will do in the future is towards His vision.
Throughout the Bible we see that having vision is vitally important in the kingdom of God. But when we lack understanding of God's vision, much of the Bible will not make any sense. Without knowledge of God's big picture, we are unlikely to be able to receive and fulfil His vision for our individual lives. As a result, every aspect of our lives will be affected.
Without vision, obedience to God becomes a struggle. Without vision, we will fail to contribute to the work of the corporate Body, the Church, as God intended. Without vision, we fail to be God's agency to evangelise the world. Without vision, believers don't pursue the upward call. They slide down the slippery slope of apathy and disinterest, neglecting the things of God. That is the reason why God warned His people of the consequences of lacking vision: Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. Proverbs 29:18 (KJAV).
The 'ripple effect'
The negative effect of not having or of letting go of God's vision is far-reaching. It reminds me of when I was a boy and would throw a stone into a pond and watch what happened. As the stone broke the surface of the water, it would disappear from sight. The stone I once held in my hand was no longer mine; I had let it go and it had sunk to the muddy bed of the pond.
By then I had lost interest in the stone. What held my attention was its impact on the surface of the water. It never failed to fascinate me how letting go of one stone could cause ripple after ripple, spreading wider and wider, to disturb the previously smooth surface of the pond. This picture illustrates that everything that we humans do, whether positive or negative, has an effect on our lives and other people's lives as it ripples outwards.
The prophet Jeremiah observed something that also illustrates this. He had personally seen something which must have saddened and horrified him. His words describe the behaviour of previously godly men who had not only fallen into sin themselves but whose example was leading others into sin from which they were not turning back. Jeremiah 23:14.
Jeremiah knew how important it was for believers to know and keep God's vision in the forefront of their minds. When we don't know it or when we lose sight of it, we replace God's vision with our own and we live as if we are 'god' of our own world. This is really the sin of idolatry, and once we have given in to it, we so easily fall into further sin. We allow sin and circumstances to draw us away from God, His plan and purpose.
The Bible contains accounts of many men and women who started out following God but who allowed sin into their lives. The same thing happens today and it is always disturbing when this happens. It is particularly so when previously righteous, godly people who are called and anointed by God to positions of influence or leadership become captivated by sin. Those who trust these leaders and are accustomed to follow them are in danger of being negatively influenced by them. Jeremiah's warning still applies today.
God will hear and respond to everyone who responds to His vision for salvation for their own life, but how are people to know about it in the first place? Yes, it is written in the Bible, but how many of those who are lost and searching for the meaning to life have a Bible? How many know that the answers they need are in the Bible and know where to look?
The Apostle Paul's words in the book of Romans alert believers to see we have a part to play in the overall vision of bringing the lost to salvation: Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed?
And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? Romans 10:13-14. Believers are to let others know the good news of the gospel of salvation because, as Paul pointed out, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17.
God's 'known' and 'unknown' will
The revelation of God's vision for the lost to be saved comes through reading the Word or hearing it preached. It has to become personal revelation, conviction and inspiration so that the Word is put into action. God's will is His Word and is what I call His 'known will for our lives, which enables us to follow His vision.
The Bible also reveals that God inspires individuals with a personal vision for their life, which will support His overall vision. I call this God's 'unknown will because its unknown to believers generally but is revealed to an individual to give direction as God chooses.
Many of us are impatient and want to know first and foremost what our personal calling is, but there are no short cuts. All believers must first study the Word and obey it. No-one can know what I call the 'unknown will of God before they know and are obeying His 'known will, which is contained and revealed in His Word.
The starting point for all believers in serving God must always be to make it their personal responsibility to
