Vertical Worship - Chris Byrd

Introduction
As the youngest of six children, I watched my three brothers Jimmie, Dennis and Anthony play the piano and organ and teach and direct choirs, while my two sisters Shirley and Joyce sang. I quickly became fascinated with music, and by the age of four I had begun my musical journey of playing the piano, but I never thought it would become such an important part of my life and ministry.
Even though she did not really play, my sister Joyce taught me the first song I ever played on the piano, and from that point on I was inspired to sit and learn as the Holy Spirit began developing my ears. Not only was I able to hear what other musicians were playing, I also gained the ability to discern musical sounds from Heaven that were to be birthed here on earth. By starting at such a young age and spending many hours on the piano making noise and disturbing the household, it became natural for me to just play whatever I heard. If I heard it, I could play it. No matter how difficult, I wouldn’t stop until I could play it like I heard it. Whether I heard it on the radio or heard it in my spirit, I was relentless in rehearsing it over and over again. I never took any lessons or learned to read music; I just played what I heard.
As a child I would always hear music in my head and would make sounds with my mouth or make beats with my hands—which would always get me in trouble in the classroom. My teachers would write things on my report card like, Chris always makes strange noises in class which annoy others.
In my music class I would tell my teacher if she played a wrong chord on the piano, and I would tell her what key she was playing the song in while sitting in my seat. She would be quite annoyed but yet amazed at my ear for perfect pitch. In my elementary school years I was the strange but somewhat cool kid who many people would say was going to make it big with my musical talents. At that time I had no idea what God was doing in and through me by way of music, nor did I understand how powerful music can be. I did not realize the effect music has, or how it can make people feel certain ways or do certain things. Once I began to understand the power of music it changed my life and the way I ministered in music.
Throughout my journey of music and ministry there have been several people who have inspired me and imparted to me helping to make me who I am today. Two key people in particular are very dear to me: my mentor and godfather Bishop Rance Allen who took me under his wing at the age of nineteen thus beginning the development of my professional ministry and career as a musician, singer, songwriter, producer and preacher; and my current pastor, Dr. Pat McKinstry, who has birthed the worshipper in me and refined my gifts and my character as well.
It is my prayer that every musician, singer, and songwriter will be greatly blessed in reading this book and will fully understand the weight and responsibility that is on them because of the gift that God has entrusted them with. I also pray that through this book and teaching you will learn to develop your spiritual hearing so that the sound from heaven can be birthed here on earth.
Chapter 1
The Love of Music
Ibelieve that God is a musical God; I believe that He loves music. That’s why we are told to Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
Psalms 100:2
He instructs us to offer praise unto Him not only with our voice, but with instruments of music as well.
Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.
Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
Psalms 150:3-5
I am certain that the reason
