    A Vampire Romance - Mary J. Goldstein

    friend.

    -1-

I find myself looking out the classroom window at the blooming leaves on the trees just as my teacher catches me. Amanda can you name the parts of the cell and their functions? The school bell rings and I am saved. My teacher asks me to have the answer ready for class tomorrow. I leave Biology class and head to the cafeteria to meet Cindy. I can’t believe the day is already half over. Today just flew by and there is an electric buzz in the air. Spring time has a way of waking people up from that long winter slumber. Living in upstate New York has its drawbacks, namely the winter months. I don’t like the cold or the snow, so when spring comes I rejoice and it’s hard to not have a smile on my face every day. I walk up grab my tray and get my food while looking for Cindy. She is sitting in our normal spot in the far corner of the cafeteria by the windows. She looks abnormally excited today grinning from ear to ear. I wonder what is up with her today? She is my best friend but she can get overly excited about what I might think is a normal event in life.

Hi Cindy, what’s up? Amanda, you are not going to believe what I’m hearing the other girls talk about this morning in gym class. What’s that? "There is a rumor going around that there is a new guy who just moved here from California. There is a real buzz from all the girls that he is extremely hot!"Flipping my hair to the side. "Really, well I’ll believe it when I see it." Cindy looks me over. "You have to find some time to find yourself a boyfriend and take a break from all you’re extra school activities and live it up while you’re still young." Cindy tells me as she takes a bite of her apple. I fire back at her. "I know you are always pointing that out to me. But you know how important it is to me to get into a good college. I know, but you can’t blame me for trying." Cindy responds as she spits out a chunk of apple on her tray. Hmm, I guess her table manners have room for improvement. And this is my daily love life coach. I’m doomed to be single for a very long time.

Cindy and I finish our lunch while enjoying the springtime view outside. Then we head off to separate classes and I thank her for the pep talk. It’s a good thing we do not have many classes together, because while she is one of my best friends she would drive me crazy. I know that I need to find myself a boyfriend, but I am perfectly happy right now with just with my school work, chorus and band. I don’t want to complicate things further and get behind after all I am almost finished with high school. Right now the most important thing to me is to do well in school so I can get into a good college. It is not easy to become a Doctor if you start out with low grades.

I head for my locker grab my English book and folder on the way to class. As I enter the class room I notice my teacher has her windows part way open and a fresh breeze is blowing in and I can hear the birds chirping. I slide on over to sit in my normal spot and just as I sit down I hear a couple of girls behind me whispering about the new guy. I turn around and ask them what they have heard and I see Sarah’s eyes get really big. She drops her pen and folder on the floor. My heart skipped a beat and I knew at once that the new guy was coming through the class room door into our English class. I turn around and sure enough there he is walking through the door. As my heart beats faster I put my head slightly down and my bangs fall into my face covering my eyes slightly. I look through strands of my hair up at the new guy as he enters the room. He is wearing an under armor shirt and nice fitting jeans. His skin is fair and without blemish. He has a strongly defined jawline and dimples, very nice:) As he walks in the wind from the open windows blows through his dark hair. His hair is almost shoulder length with a sexy messy look, and it makes his deep blue eyes all that more pronounced. His body is well proportioned and defined but not too muscular. He glides past me and picks up Sarah’s folder and pen and hands it to her with a half grin on his face I find sexy. He proceeds past the girls behind me to an empty seat in the back of the room. He takes off his backpack and sets it on his desk. I can hear the girls behind me try to contain their excitement and squeals. Just my luck as my grades are doing great with all A’s and band and chorus are running smoothly for me and now I have another distraction. The new guy is way too good looking to ignore, but I must be strong. Our school does not have a shortage of cute guys, but there is something so alluring about a new guy that the girls have not yet discovered. And it’s a brand new opportunity to give someone new a good impression. Most of the boys in our class are total jerks, with an exceptional few that still have manners and know how to treat a girl. The trouble is most of those guys are not that interested in girls. Those are the ones I’ve ended up friends with. My parents have done a great job keeping the cool guys away from me. But I am sure my braces and glasses probably don’t help much either. Maybe I have kept myself away from trying to find a boyfriend because I would not be able to find the guy I would want to be with anyways. I am starting to hate the new guy already for making me see my life in a new light. I really don’t need this right now. What is wrong with me that I feel this way? I have not even talked to this guy yet and already I am making judgments against him. I can hear the girls behind me giggling and I am sure that they are already texting other friends back and forth about the new guy being in their class and posting pictures on Facebook. Why does he have to sit behind me? I feel so uncomfortable now. How am I going to get through this class with him here? I am going to try to block him out so I can survive. It’s my only hope.

Finally the teacher walks in and takes her place in front of the class. Mrs. Bender is almost never late but today it’s almost five minutes after. I am surprised that the class held itself together that long. Mrs. Bender addresses the class that we have a new student to welcome. Mrs. Bender takes a piece of paper from her suit jacket and reads the new guys name from it. She asks the class to welcome Brad Angel from Santa Monica, California. Angel, that’s perfect. I am surprised she does not make the poor guy stand up. Everyone looks back to him and he nods his head to acknowledge the classroom in a kind of dark and mysterious way not saying a word. All eyes are on Brad Angel, something tells me he likes the attention and is used to getting his way. It seems like good looking people usually do at least at my school.

Mrs. Bender:Brad, can you please tell us briefly about yourself?

Brad:My family and I just moved here from California. I am in a rock band with my two brothers and sister.

Mrs. Bender: Oh really, that is exciting. What is the name of your band?

    Brad: It’s Broken Heart.

Mrs. Bender: What type of music instrument do you play?

Brad: I am the lead singer of our band and I play some guitar. Our band is a cross between blues and rock. We have some dates early this summer at the amusement park and at the local theatre if anyone is interesting is seeing us play.

Mrs. Bender: Wow that is amazing that you
