      Why Change?

      "From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’"

      (Matthew 4:17)

      Motivated by unconditional love, the eternal God and creator of all things stepped out of glory and became a part of His creation by humbling Himself and becoming a man (John 1:1, 14). As man, Jesus was given a specific assignment to perform that no one else could do – to initiate and make provision for restoration of the severed relationship between Father God and the object of His love, man(kind) (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). Jesus knew that the price of this reconciliation meant that He must voluntarily lay down His life as a substitute payment for the sin debt of all mankind (2 Corinthians 5:21). Knowing this, why did Jesus delay fulfilling the requirement for three and a half years? Why did He avoid being captured several times during His earthly ministry?

      As important and needful as His assignment of reconciliation, Jesus knew that He had an equally important and needful subtask. To completely fulfill His assignment of reconciliation, Jesus knew that He also had to preach and prepare (Luke 4:18-19) mankind as to how to live a life that has been reconciled back unto Father God:

      Preach (proclaim, tell people) the Gospel (the good news), and

      Prepare mankind by teaching and modeling how to live out the Gospel.

      With full knowledge and complete understanding of the totality of His assignment, Jesus began His earthly ministry by making this calculated and intentional declaration:

      "From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’"

      So, Jesus began moving towards the work of His ultimate assignment (reconciliation), by performing the subtasks of preaching and preparing. Jesus knew that a restored relationship would not have the desired results for both parties unless and until both parties knew and understood the nature of their relationship. Let’s look at this scenario.

      It is as if I were childless and my desire to love and nurture a child was so great that I was compelled to adopt a child, and the child I wanted to adopt was from another country (let’s say one that is wracked with abject poverty). I completed all of the legal requirements. I met all of the financial obligations. I successfully completed all of the regulations and requirements. The adoption is finalized, and I got the child and brought him to my country and to my home. Once I have him at my home, because he is now my son, all I have is now available to him - he now has complete access to all that I own. But, I never tell him he is now a US citizen. I don’t teach him the language and culture of my (and now his) country. I don’t even tell him that he is now my son, and that as my son he has complete access to all that I own. I may somehow get partial benefit out of this new relationship, but my son is probably so disturbed and confused by this new relationship that he wishes to go back where he came from – no matter how bad his situation was.
