- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Although aimed primarily at quilters, this book is a solid addition to the library of any fabric painter. The techniques are equally applicable to fabrics for fashion and costuming, home décor, mixed media work, and any other arts or crafts that involve fabric. The best thing about this book is Walter’s approach: She starts by getting beginners familiar with the basics: paints, color, fabric, and supplies. Seasoned fabric painters should review these comprehensive sections, too, as you are likely to discover new materials – or learn something you didn’t know about the materials you’re already using. With the basics covered, Walter dives right into techniques and projects, including great tips for achieving the effects you want using color washes and several methods of creating visual texture. Patterns for use with the projects are incorporated into the book.Of course, the gallery section provides inspiration from a number of artists – and even though they are focused on quilting, as I said earlier, the eye candy in this section will stimulate ideas for any kind of painted fabric projects. Finally, the resources section lists websites for supplies and ideas, as well as a list of books for further reading and exploration. If you work with fabric and paint, or if you want to get started with painted fabrics, Fabric Painting With Cindy Walter is a great book to refer back to time and again.
