    Last Chance - Dennis Pedersen

    Day

    CHAPTER 1

It was a cold and snowy Christmas Eve outside of the St. Clare household and inside; all were gathered at the table for a delicious dinner of prime rib and all the fixings. A traditional prayer was given by Thomas and shared by all. They gave thanks to God for all of their blessings, even though it had been a difficult financial year with the economy in a deep recession.

As the dinner progressed, Melina began to finally go into labor, after a long difficult pregnancy. Every precaution was taken to get her to the hospital safely and on time as she and her husband Thomas had lost their first child one year earlier; a premature stillbirth at five months.

During the birth, at around 2:00 a.m., Melina had serious complications and again, her baby boy was delivered stillborn and pronounced dead. Thomas and Melina were extremely distraught over their loss.

The baby boy was soon brought downstairs to the morgue for an autopsy that was to be conducted at around 10:00 a.m.

It was around 4:00 a.m. and the morgue was dark as the Medical Examiner was not to come on duty until 8:00. Bob, the building maintenance engineer who was to do his nightly maintenance of the morgue, walked in and proceeded towards the light switch to turn on the lights. As he began to reach for the switch, in the shadows of the dark room, he saw an illuminated figure hovering in the air towards the back of the room.

Bob cautiously approached the light and saw an angelic figure, which appeared to be in suspended animation over the baby boy, who was entombed in a clear-glass receptacle. At that moment, the light of the figure seemed to enter into the baby's body and Bob could not believe what he saw. As he stood there in amazement, he heard a baby's cry and rushed over to see for himself. As Bob looked down on the body in the glass box, he saw that the baby boy was alive and he began to cry. He knew that a true miracle had just happened and that he had witnessed it first hand.

Bob immediately contacted the emergency room staff and the doctors and nurses all rushed down to see the miracle. That morning at approximately 7:00 a.m. the baby boy was brought upstairs and introduced to his mom and dad.

The next day, the miracle was in all the local and national newspapers and on all of the T.V. stations. The hospital staff had no concrete, scientific explanations as to how this miracle could have occurred; they could only express that the baby was a Gift from God.

    CHAPTER 2

    Five Years Later

Thomas and Melina’s son Jacob was a very precocious child and extremely inquisitive. His interests were not that of the typical child; wanting to watch TV or play video games. He enjoyed reading at a level much higher than his peers. His parents were Christians; however they were not Holy Rollers and kept their spiritual beliefs private within the family. They did not attend church services but that did not diminish their strong belief in Jesus. Jacob had asked his parents if they would take him to church; after all, this Sunday was Easter. They agreed and thought this would be a good time to introduce Jacob to church and for him to attend Sunday school with children his own age.

The Sunday school was located in the education wing of the church, with classes for grades kindergarten to eighth. The eighth-graders down the hall were all gathering to enter the main section of the church, as today they were to become confirmed and recognized as adult members. To be confirmed, each student was asked a specific question about the Bible, by the pastor. The students had studied all year for this special day and already knew the questions that were to be asked. Still, the students were nervous and had to perform under pressure, in front of the entire congregation.

Jacob, his classmates, and the other classes in the church had now returned to the pews, with their parents awaiting the eighth-graders’ entrance to the front section of the church. As the confirmation proceedings ended with a last question, Pastor John congratulated all of the students for a job well done and also thanked all of the parents and the congregation for their support. The eighth-grade students were now considered adult members of the church.

Pastor John now invited the entire congregation to gather in the lunchroom for refreshments and celebration. At that moment, Jacob got out of his seat and walked up to Pastor John in front of the church. He said, I have a question I would like to ask. The entire church went quiet and Pastor John did not know what to say or how to react to this five-year-old child.

Chuckling with amusement, the pastor asked, What is your question?

Jacob took the hand-held microphone from the pastor and said, I only have one question to ask all of the adults; including you, pastor, and that is; the scriptures state that God is innate in everyone, God is love and God forgives those that believe and obey the Ten Commandments.

Pastor John replied, That is correct but what is your question?

Jacob’s response was; Is that why are there so many sinners in this church today, who are committing adultery and disobeying these commandments? Pastor John asked Jacob why he thought this and he answered, Because you are one of the sinners. You had an affair one year ago and she had an abortion.

The pastor looked down at this small, five-year-old child and said, You are lying and who told you to say that? Your parents?

Jacob said, "No, my parents know nothing of this matter but I know, because I can see it when I look into your eyes, as the eyes are the windows to your soul."

Three months later, the pastor had resigned in disgrace because of pressure from the church elders. You see, Pastor John had impregnated a fourteen-year-old girl, who was one of his Sunday school students. An imaginary thought of Pastor John being persecuted on the cross had appeared as the police escorted him from his residence.

    CHAPTER 3

    Seven Years Later

Jacob was now twelve and was being home-schooled by Melina. He was working well above a senior-year level and Melina could not keep up with him, as this was now exceeding her teaching ability.

Thomas and Melina decided to take Jacob to a university that was only a few miles from their home and have him academically tested. Jacob was excited about this as he had driven by the university probably a hundred times and could now finally see what the school was really like. They met with Mrs. Johnson at the testing center and had Jacob scheduled to take his SATs. Mrs. Johnson gave Jacob some study materials to take home so he could prepare for the test but Jacob said that he did not need to study the materials because he was ready for the test. Mrs.
