Introduction
Congratulations!
Right now, you’ve undoubtedly been hugged and toasted dozens of times. This is an amazingly blissful time in your life…and you have a wedding to plan! This book will guide you and give you the #1 advantage in wedding planning: organization. Staying on top of things, knowing what needs to be done when, who’s doing it, and who’s paying for it is the best way to make the most of the planning months ahead. The details are outlined here, giving you an added boost of confidence and the security that you’re not missing anything.
Nothing is ever perfect, but with this book it could be so streamlined a planning process as to almost seem that way.
That is my wish for you, and it is my inspiration in creating this checklist book for you both.
It’s time now to get started on all the exciting tasks ahead…
Part One
Your First Steps
1
Making the Announcement
You’ve already called or emailed everyone you know with the news of your engagement, and your parents have shared the great news with everyone they know. They may even be planning an engagement party for you, complete with catering and lots of champagne. Everyone is just thrilled!
There’s even more excitement to come, and even more people to make the announcement to.
To prepare for the exciting step of placing an engagement announcement in the newspaper, here’s your checklist:
Your Engagement Photo
___Plan to have your engagement photo taken by either a professional photographer you hire or a friend with an excellent digital camera.
___Choose the perfect setting for your engagement photo, such as on the beach, or in a garden.
___Set aside lots of time for the photo session.
___Plan what you’ll both wear.
___Take several different shots, in several different poses, to find the ideal choice.
___Have the photos developed, or upload them online to a site such as www.ofoto.com.
___Get a few printed in black and white if you wish.
___Get extra copies of prints and enlargements to keep and frame, and to share with friends and family.
Choosing Your Newspaper
___Select which newspapers you’ll submit your announcement to:
• Your hometown paper(s)
• Your parents’ hometown paper
• Your grandparents’ hometown paper
• The paper where you used to live and where many of your relatives and friends still reside
___Look in the paper (or on the paper’s website) for their submission directions, such as what info to include and where to send your announcement.
___Send your engagement announcement in to the paper as soon as you’d like!
___Make sure you find out the date in which your announcement will appear, so that you can cut out your section as a keepsake.
___If it will be online, feel free to email the page link to your faraway friends and family.
Your Wedding Website
A wonderful, twenty-first-century option for sharing the news of your engagement.
Check out www.wedstudio.com as an example of what can be done with today’s unique wedding web-sites. Hint: this makes a great gift from parents to an engaged couple!
Here are some of the most popular options you might wish to add to your own site:
___The story of your engagement.
___The date, time, and location of your wedding—include links to the sites where your ceremony and reception will be held.
___Links to your wedding registries.
___Links to the hotels where guests can reserve their rooms, including the code for your block of rooms discount.
___Introductions to your wedding party, including pictures of them and short bios.
___Pictures and short bios of your parents and grandparents.
___Your wedding-weekend activities schedule, including who’s hosting, what the event is, where to RSVP.
___Babysitting contacts.
___Links to any airline group discount plans, if your group will have to fly to your wedding location.
___An online blog recounting the wedding plans as they’re happening.
___An auto-countdown to your wedding date.
___The results of guest polls and surveys.
___Detailed bios of both you and the groom, with plenty of pictures of you both.
___Send everyone the announcement link.
Watch Out for Overkill!
It seems the trend just took off, and already the etiquette experts are complaining that some wedding websites are just way too loaded with details, rants, and over-the-top cheesiness. So consider that you can go too far in building your site. Keep the cute little childhood snapshots of you both to a minimum, and remember that what you put online is up for the entire world to see. Don’t go too far!
