About this ebook

Proper decorum has never come easily to Carlotta Anne Fairleigh—not even tonight, when the lovely, impetuous miss is finally making her debut. As she waits to make her entrance, she can't help wondering about the darkened house next door, the supposedly abandoned home of Hayden St. Clair, the man society has dubbed the "Murderous Marquess." Certainly one small peek through his window before the festivities would be harmless . . .

And, naturally, this latest "adventure" ends in disaster, thoroughly compromising the budding debutante's reputation and leaving her suddenly, unthinkably . . . betrothed! Soon she's en route to the wilds of Cornwall in the company of the handsome, mysterious marquess whose name the ton whisper with fear and loathing.

Yet there is something thrilling—and surprisingly tender—about her dark, unreachable groom, and the desire in his eyes is undeniable. But before Lottie will surrender to the yearnings in her heart, she must unlock the secrets of Hayden's past, no matter how scandalous—or perilous—they may be.

Look this book is readable because Teresa Medeiros is a good writer. On the other hand, some serious "Jane Eyre" moments going on here.

Way too many plot points and characters.
    -Harriet
    -Ned Townsend
    -Ghost
    -Old crone teacher

The paranormal aspect definitely could have been omitted. The beginning of the story and first couple chapters were great with Hayden and Lottie displaying fantastic friction, sexual tension, and chemistry. Their competing dialogue had me highly anticipating their relationship. Unfortunately, the chemistry disappears as soon as they get married. The story switches to Lottie feeling lost in Cornwall and dealing with Hayden's bratty but oh so misunderstood daughter. Even though I thought the book was pretty mediocre and was anticipating the ending it still ended up feeling abrupt.

Read up until Hayden and Lottie get married, it's all down hill from there. (Haha, maybe this was a philosophical/political point from Medeiros)

Medeiros has way better books out there, this one is can be skipped.

Lottie Fairleigh is overindulged and not quite ready to grow up, in spite of the fact that her coming out party is tonight, delayed due to her antics in the past. The last thing the Murderous Marquess wants is another woman in his life. Hounded by enough scandal, he wants nothing to do with society. So when he catches Lottie peering in his window, he isn't quite sure what to do with her. This book is a fun look at a strong-willed, childish woman who is forced to grow up literally overnight. I cried through her trials and laughed at her blunders. In reading another review, I'm not sure I'd argue that Hayden did lack some redeeming qualities, but I could still understand the betrayal he felt, the brooding and the pain. He had moments of "humanness" that worked for me, and Lottie's effervescent personality more than compensated, as it was intended to. Reading Teresa Medeiros is like reading Victoria Holt for me. I know what to expect from her books, and she has yet to leave me disappointed.

Now she's bethrothed and on her way to Cornwall. She now wants to know about his past and what the story about his nickname is. Meanwhile they're both starting to find attraction to each other.I found it quite readable and interesting.
