About this ebook

“Dark, sexy, and smart... A stunningly good read.” — Linda Fairstein, author of Hell Gate

“Utterly compelling . . . A classic page turner.” — Karin Slaughter, author of Undone

In Hush, New York Times bestselling author of the Bailey Weggins mystery series and many standalone novels, Kate White has penned an exciting thriller sure to keep readers interested until the last page.

Hush follows, Lake Warren, when she learns that her husband Jack is suing for full custody of their two kids, four months after their separation, she’s pretty certain that things can’t get any worse. The upside is that she’s working with the Advanced Fertility Center as a marketing consultant, alongside the attractive, flirtatious Dr. Keaton. But when, the morning after their one-night stand, she finds Keaton with his throat slashed, Lake learns that things can indeed become worse-they can become deadly.

So as not to jeopardize her case for custody, Lake is forced to lie to the police. Having just been intimate with a man who has been murdered, and wanting to protect herself from being charged with the crime, she begins her own search for the truth. But when the police start looking at her closely, people at the clinic start treating her with hostility, and strange and dangerous clues begin dropping-quite literally-on her doorstep, Lake realizes that she is dangerously close to dark secrets about Keaton and the clinic.

The real question is, can Lake stop what she’s started before it’s too late?

I’m going to get straight to the point. I didn’t like this. Not only is Lake’s name ridiculous, most of her actions are ridiculous. She seems to be allergic to the police, no matter what sort of danger or harassment has befallen her, all with the weak excuse of "if anything bad is connected with me, my ex-husband will steal my kids!". It just didn’t hold together for me. I thought she was infuriatingly stupid. With infertility treatment being a burgeoning issue, this could have been an interesting mystery, but instead we’re burdened with an awful protagonist and giant red herring. I won’t be in a rush to pick up another book by this author.

Lake Warren is in the middle of a terrible custody battle with her ex. On her first outing with a charismatic fertility doctor (while her kids are away at camp), the date ends with is murder, and Lake is a wreck. She was in the apartment with the killer but she saw no one.Would you remain silent? I think I might. The fertility clinic, where Lake is working as a consultant, is a hotbed of gossip and speculation. The police keep questioning her as she scrambles to solve the murder, and clear herself for the sake of her family.Something besides the murder is wrong at the clinic. Lake starts talking to a reporter, Archer, who has been investigating for a story, and he is aware of a problem as well, but has no proof.Lake is terrified, but agrees to look further. When suddenly things go completely awry, it is a slam, bang, shocking conclusion!I have read Kate White's Bailey Weggins series, but his book is not as "smart ass" or "wise guy" fun. That is not to say I didn't enjoy it. It is a good, solid mystery, whose ending I did not see coming. I recommend this for anyone who likes a good solid, intelligent mystery.I received this book from Harper for review. Thanks so much!

I don't read many mystery/thriller books, (mostly because I don't like the whole women-in-jeopardy-thing) but once I picked up Kate White's Hush, I found I couldn't put it down.Lake Warren (why do they always have names like that?) is going through a bitter divorce, and now her soon-to-be ex is suing for full custody of their two children. She runs her own small marketing firm, and she is in the middle of working on a big presentation for a hot-shot fertility clinic. She makes the mistake of sleeping with one of the playboy doctors at the clinic who ends up murdered after their tryst. If she tells the police she was there, she could lose custody of her children. Instead, she decides to find out who the murderer is. Oh yeah, and someone is calling her and leaving frightening messages on her phone. Is it her ex-husband or the real murderer? There is also something odd going on at the clinic. Was the doctor killed by a jealous husband, because of gambling debts, or did he find out something illegal was being done at the clinic? The author does a good job creating characters with believable motivations. Any mom can relate to panicking at the thought of losing her children, and making bad decisions because of that fear.White also paces the action in the novel so well, it's a real page turner. Lake gets herself into more than a few jams, and your pulse will race as she extricates herself. I will say that one of those jams involving water was a little over the top for me, but it was scary. The mystery of who killed the doctor keeps you guessing right up until the end, and I have to confess I was surprised. The setting of Manhattan is used to good effect, you really get a good sense of the city.If you're looking for something to take you out of your day and you have a few hours on your hands, pick up Hush. Just remind yourself to breathe while you're reading it.

I hate to finish a book hoping it's a stand alone, but in this case, yes. It was an ok thriller but frankly the heroine, Lake Warren, didn't really do it for me. I felt she didn't make good choices, and maybe wasn't fleshed out enough. I admit I didn't necessarily see the end coming, but whether that's because it's a spectacular mystery or left poor clues for me, is unsure. I highly recommend White's Bailey Weggins series. The first is called If Looks Could Kill, and they are very good.

Isn’t it funny, how it seems like similar things often appear simultaneously? Remember the disaster summer at the movies, Deep Impact and Armageddon? It seems like I inadvertently read similar books near the same time too. Two such books, which I probably should review individually, (but heck..it’s my review and I’ll double up is I want to) were Hush by Kate White and Ordinary Thunderstorms by William Boyd. In both of these books, the protagonists were placed in unlikely situations and then behaved in an idiotic manner. In Ordinary Thunderstorms, the hero, Adam Kindred, is in London for a job interview. Feeling good about his future, he’s having dinner alone when he strikes up a conversation with a fellow diner. Based on this chance encounter, Adam is soon on the run from the police; the primary suspect in a murder. The main character in Hush, Lake Warren is feeling pretty low. She has just discovered that her husband, who she has only been separated from for a few months, is suing for full custody of her kids. With her kids away at camp, she is doing some marketing for an infertility clinic. One evening, after an office get-together, she goes home with a clinic doctor who had been flirting with her. Upon waking in the morning, in a strange apartment, she is horrified to discover the doctor has been murdered; his throat slashed. Based on this encounter, Lake is soon immersed in a game of cat and mouse with the unknown killer, and fearing she will soon come under suspicion by the police. Okay, I know, it sounds like I’m really stretching to compare these two books. But they just felt similar to me. Both protagonists were, in a word, idiots. Now, both authors justified the characters moronic choices. I’ll admit, I’ve never woke up in an apartment with a man with a slashed throat while my soon to be ex is threatening to take my kids. And I’ve never visited London, attempted to return a forgotten file to a casual acquaintance from a diner, walked into his hotel room through door left ajar and found a dead guy on the bed. Perhaps if these situations occurred to me, I’d be an idiot too. But I’d like to think I’d call the police in the first instance, and leave the damn file at the reception desk in the second. Supposing I was momentarily flummoxed and made all the wrong choices, and now thought I was in deep trouble. I’d still like to think I’d be smart enough to find a lawyer and talk to the police. As you can tell, I wasn’t too impressed with either book. I wanted to smack Lake Warren upside her privileged spoiled head for the stupid things she did. And by the time the book concluded, I just didn’t really care who the crazy killer was. Yep, it was a little bit of a surprise, I didn’t peg the killer early on, but I didn’t really try. I just didn’t care all that much. And although Adam Kindred was a more interesting character, I didn’t have much patience with his choice to become a homeless bum in London instead of talking to the police. Both of their choices just made me think, “Really? Seriously? What the hell is wrong with these people??” (Review copies provided by Harper Collins)

HUSH is the latest from best selling author and Editor in Chief of Cosmo magazine, Kate White. Though she has written several successful books in her Bailey Weggins Series, this is her first stand alone novel and the only one I've read. But I can assure you it won't be the last. Here's a quick synopsis of the story from Harper Collins -When Lake Warren learns that her husband, Jack, is suing for full custody of their two children four months after their separation, she's pretty certain things can't get any worse. The upside is she's working with the Advanced Fertility Center as a marketing consultant alongside the attractive, flirtatious Dr.Keaton. But the morning after their one-night stand, Lake finds Keaton with his throat slashed and discovers that things can indeed become worse - they can become deadly. So as to not jeopardize her case for custody, Lake is forced to lie to the police. Having just been intimate with a man who has been murdered, and wanting to protect herself from being charged with the crime, she begins her search for the truth. Meanwhile, the police start looking at her closely, people at the clinic start treating her with hostility, and strange clues begin dropping - quite literally - on her doorstep, and Lake realizes that she is dangerously close to dark secrets, both about Keaton and the clinic. But can Lake finish what she started before it's too late?I hadn't read a murder mystery in awhile so I was looking forward to cracking this one open. One thing I liked about this book right off the bat was that it jumped right into the story from page one. I didn't have to wait long for things to get rolling. Another thing I liked was having a fertility clinic be in the center of this mystery. This worked for me because it was something different that I haven't seen too much in murder mysteries. Fertility clinics are big business right now and this story brings up issues that women today may be facing when using fertility clinics. I found the story to be suspenseful and believable even though I didn't always agree with the decisions made by Lake Warren, the main character. Speaking of the main character, I did like her immediately and felt she was a strong female character that I began pulling for right away. There was a wide range of supporting characters that gave the story many interesting angles, but not too many that it mucked it up. As the story progressed I found myself changing my mind as to who I thought the killer might be many different times. All in all, the story moved along nicely and I didn't feel like there were any slow spots that dragged for me. I was also pleased with the ending. The title of this book is a small word but in this story, Lake discovers that sometimes keeping quiet is harder than you ever thought.I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good suspenseful mystery without all of the blood and guts of some hard core murder mysteries. I enjoyed the story without being afraid to turn the lights out at night. That's the kind of mystery I like.

I'm still shaking. I can feel my heart pounding and I have to remind myself that it was just a book. I started this book and immediately was drawn into the lead character, Lake Warren. The first few chapters telling of her strive for independence as her divorce is finalizing and her struggle with custody issues. But then when she gets herself caught in a web of fear when she finds a man, that she slept with casually, murdered in his bed while she slept on the terrace, Lake feels that no one will believe her innocence and she will lose her children. The story revolves around Lake efforts to keep herself out of the limelight so that the police will not ask her for a DNA sample, but since she is working for the same Infertility Clinic as the victim, she has to keep a straight face while trying to solve the murder herself. The story was riveting and keep me going until I had to find out the ending. Highly recommended for Thriller lovers.

I agree with ethel55_1, the heroine was not that great. Frankly, I thought she was an idiot who deserved to die because she was so stupid.

While the leading woman in this novel leaves something to be desired; she's not the smartest tool in the shed...I couldn't put this book down!! I would read a chapter, get hooked, and say, "okay, just one more and I'll go to bed." Ha ha! I finished this book in under two days. Can't wait to read the sequel. Ms. White nailed this page turner!!
