About this ebook

What does it mean to be loyal?

Mathew and Mugo, two boys—one white, one black—share an uneasy friendship in Kenya in the 1950s. They're friends even though Mathew's dad owns the land and everything on it. They're friends despite the difference in their skin color. And they're friends in the face of the growing Mau Mau rebellion, which threatens British settlers with violence as black Kenyans struggle to win back their land and freedom. But suspicions and accusations are escalating, and an act of betrayal could change everything.

Internationally acclaimed, award-winning author Beverley Naidoo explores the fragile bonds of friendship in this stunning novel about prejudice, fear, and the circumstances that bring people together—and tear them apart.

This is the story of two boys, one white (Matthew Greyson) and one black (Mugo) who are living in the same household in Kenya in the 1950's. This is the time that the Mau Mau are seeking the independence of Kenya from Great Britain. Mugo is Matthew's playmate but also a servant in his family's house. As the opposition to British rule increases, Kenya becomes a police state. When trouble comes to the Greyson's house, Mugo and his family are unjustly accused. Will Matthew tell the truth and face the consequences or will he betray Mugo. This is the story of a time and place that is unfamilar to most Americans. This book will interest readers who like books set in foreign countries or who like to consider ethical questions.

Burn My Heart is an important story for anyone of any age & race to hear. The book shows the viewpoints of both sides, especially from a young person's perspective. It's eye-opening to see how easy it is to relate to the ignorant & unfair thoughts & feelings that go through a person's mind. While one chapter will be from the viewpoint of Matthew, the wazungu, the white boy-the following chapter will focus on the perception of Mugo, a young Kikuyu boy who's people are native to Kenya. Like life, the story unfolds gradually until one small spark ignites the situation and events quickly deteriorate into a tragic ending. Both boys are faced with new realizations, new perceptions. They aren't naive little boys anymore.

A great story about the Mau rising in Kenya- set around the friendship between Mathew and Mugo. The story will resonant with young adult readers as they explore the history of Black African nationalism
