- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Make sure you know what you are getting into if you read this book. I would say over half of it was previously printed in other Block short story collections. It was still a good book but it is huge and if you have desire to reread previous stories, then you can skip this book.
The new stuff was good but I am not sure it alone was worth have to deal with this giant book. If you want all of your Block in one spot, then this is the book for you. I gave it 3 stars only because of the amount of reprints. The stories are great, I had just read a lot of them already. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Lawrence Block writes an entertaining story, and this anthology collects a bunch of them -- 84 short stories. Some are built around characters from different series of novels, including Matt Scudder, an ex-police detective with a heart of gold, and Bernie Rhodenbarr, a cat burglar who find himself in the middle of murders that he has to solve to save himself. This is a book to acquire and dip into as the mood strikes; it's just way too much to read straight through, particularly because many of the stories are deeply twisted, with truly anti-heroic protagonists. That's true for a number of the one-off stories; it's particularly true for the Martin Ehrengraf stories (10 appear in this collection), about a defense attorney whose clients are never guilty, or at any rate are never found guilty, which means they couldn't have been, right? The effect is a character who is charming, appealingly clever, probably psychopathic, and more than a little Mephistophelean in his dealings with his clients - but you can never be quite sure. It's remarkable, but a little goes a long way.
