I suddenly got to thinking about how many books I have in my tbr pile, how it's more than I'll probably ever read in my lifetime, and then I thought, why am I reading this book that I'm struggling through? Sure it has some elements that I like, but overall it was not an enjoyable experience, effort that I could have been putting elsewhere.

My main complaint about this novel is the terribly stilted dialogue, my goodness. Just because it's a historical novel doesn't mean the dialogue has to be stiff!

Emma Andrews discovers all manner of horrors when she goes to visit relatives at sprawling estate in 1860s England. Haunted by her mother's madness and her own fears of suffering a similar fate, she must learn to trust her instincts when begins seeing things that no one else can. She and Valerian Fox must join forces to battle an ancient evil in order to save Emma's cousin, Henrietta, from a horrible fate. Along the way, she discovers the truth about her mother's madness, and therefore the truth about what she really is.As a heroine, Emma leaves a bit to be desired. I stopped counting how many times she said, "I froze," or "I was helpless," etc., etc. She spends most of the book frozen and helpless. She has some flashes of kick-ass heroism and manages to keep Valerian, herself, and Henrietta from getting killed, but she could have done more. I understand that she is hampered by her lack of knowledge about her own past and her own powers, but a little less "woe is me, I don't know what to do" and a little more action would have been great.

This is a gothic vampire story, set in the 1920s in England, with a young heroine who finds she's meant to be a vampire hunter. The vampire is in the horror vein. It was decent, not great, I'd pick up the sequel.

This book was not quite like the other vampire stories I've read. I did however really enjoy it. It has a little bit of freakiness and spookiness in it that came across in the written word really well. I enjoyed the suspense of the story and the pace as well. I don't usually like "period" books but the language and etiquette of the time frame didn't get in the way. In fact I think it worked quite well. I think this would be a great movie. I loved the main protagonist. She was strong and confident without being overbearing. The author showed her vulnerable side appropriately. I found her sister to be quite annoying, but I think that was the point. I thoroghly enjoyed to relationship between her and Mr. Fox. I thought the back and forth was great and it was subdued just enough no tto be annoying. I found this to be a more mature read than most of my recent choices and enjoyed the change. The story was great. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good old fashioned vampire hunting story.

I expected to absolutely love Descent into Dust. A story with vampires mixed with Victorian propriety and gothic mystery seemed too good to be true. The story revolves around Emma, a young lady who has been haunted by the mystery of her mother's 'madness'. Upon visiting family she discovers that vampires do exist and that as a dhampir, her call is to fight against them. Vampires are not romanticized here and are depicted as horribly evil creatures that terrorize towns. The story was intriguing but felt very rushed. Although there was an interesting mix of characters, none of them were ever full-developed for me which made it hard to connect. I thoroughly enjoyed the intermixing of Victorian life with the glamour of vampires, it balanced the story quick well.

Although it was a little slow, I enjoyed the story.I would go into more detail, but I don't want to give anything away and others have gone into more detail. It has a complex story line and is enjoyable to read. I can't wait to read the other books!

There are no sparkly vampires here! This is a good old-fashioned vampire story. Set in Victorian England Emma lives with the stigma of her mothers madness, she has been told her mother went mad and died but events take place that will make Emma question everything she has known and believed. The cast of characters in the book was a nice mix from Emma’s needy sister, the rouge Sebastian, the secretive Mr.Fox, and the even more mysterious Father Luke. As they work together to save Emma’s niece Henrietta from what her parent’s believe is an imaginary friend but is actually something far worse he is a vampire. Not a beautiful fall in love with vampire but an evil presence that threatens everything they hold dear.I enjoyed this book it had a nice mix of Victorian propriety and gothic mystery. Emma was an interesting character as we watch her grow into the person she must become which is a Dhampir a vampire huntress. We see her inner turmoil as everything she believed of her life is wrenched away from her.I look forward to the next installment in this series.Thank you Librarything Early Reviewers for the chance to review this book!

I thought I would absolutely love this book as it is placed in one of my favorite eras and is about vampires, but unfortunately it never really caught my full attention. When the action was strong, it was really strong and captivating, but the 'in between' seemed to drag. I wish there had been more development of the secondary characters (especially Sebastian), because I found them very entertaining. Despite lacking certain things, it was very nice to read a story about an evil vampire who's not a main love interest. Overall, the concept was good, but it just didn't come together in the right way.

This was a really good traditional vampire story. It brings to mind classic vampire stories like Dracula with Victorian settings. I thought it was a good read and I look forward to more for this author. Definitely room for improvement but enjoyable none the less. I have to say I'd like a little more from the characters. The story is engaging but the characters aren't as well developed as I like them to be. Overall I'd recommend this book for sure.

Descent into Dust is a Gothic mystery in the style of Bram Stoker & Jane Austen. The Victorian social system & Catholic church play important roles in the book, and there is a pressing urgency to figure out how to kill the vampire before an innocent child is killed.I highly recommend this book to any who enjoy the Victorian era & Romanian inspired vampire lore.

I read a lot of "new vampire" books, i.e paranormal romance books. Descent into Dust was refreshing because it's a much more traditional vampire story. It unfolds slowly in vaguely ominous surroundings. I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it, and it just never really grabbed onto me. It was a little unremarkable - the main character was sympathetic, but didn't have anything special to interest me. If you're a classic vampire fan you may enjoy it more than I did.
