Boring and the main character Charlotte was annoying and did not have any sort of backbone went it came to Roman. He manipulated her and used her and she let him.

This book was amazing, although at times it felt as if it were pushing me out the moments in the book were that intimate. The atmosphere between Roman and Charlotte was intense and breathtakingly gorgeous. Roman is a dark, brooding, calculating, lethal man while Charlotte is caring, cold, fiery, and loyal; it makes for an interesting mix of emotions while reading this book.

Wow, this was hot in that darkly seductive heavily bantered way. I believe there's a book that was recommended to me in this series and it was the third, but I'm glad I'm a dedicated sequentalist. This hero was totally up my alley, and so was the "cold" heroine. I'm looking forward to the 3rd, I have definite thoughts about what's happening there and look forward to the story. This is a 4, because I can definitely see reading it again. It's not a 5 because extended metaphors simply tried too hard for elegant writing (though plenty is!) and transitions can be weird. As a chaos muppet myself, I find this very surprising as a criticism to any book coming from me so if you tend to be some kind of Bert, this may bother you. Then again, maybe my problem was not following the line of transition well enough due to aforementioned chaos muppet tendencies. Anyway, this is a sticking point for me with Lucy Parker too and I seem to be one of the only ones. I rarely say #maybeitsme but I guess I'll say that here. But still. Extended metaphors are hard to dislike for this poet's heart and now I'm just rambling, but yes, extended metaphors drag down the elegance here unfortunately.

    I need a new shelf.

A shelf called Why Did I Waste My Time?

A shelf for for books with the lowest ratio of complete to incomplete sentences.
Trant had waited for just the right hand to make the bet. Had waited for Chatsworth to get into his cups and to have some decent cards.
Had waited to place the bet when only two men would witness the wager. One, a man who was utterly devoted to his wife, and whose wife was a close friend of the lady of the bet. Who would hold the scandal secret. The other, a man who held the debts and markers of over half of London's citizens. Who would make sure the wager took place. Who wouldn't interfere--for it was his business not to interfere.
A shelf for books with the most instances of consecutive sentences beginning with the same phrase.(see above)

A shelf for books with supposedly smoldering sex scenes that are so obtuse, so fleeting, that it's over before the reader realizes what's happening.

A shelf for books that rely on italics rather than adept writing.
And she knew she was acting recklessly. But it didn't seem to matter. Even as she thought about it logically, she didn't care.
A shelf for books where the first 100 pages include a card game, a chess match, and a tea party. And nothing else.

A shelf for books by a writer whose efforts are adored by many other people.

    But not by me.

When Charlotte, accompanied by her maid, comes across Roman Merrick, she feels as if the earth as titled underneath her very own feet. He is dangerous and mysterious and she feels like he can see right through her to her soul. When her father loses to a card game, she is shocked to discover that her father gave her up for one night to the winner of the game. Charlotte is furious with her father but she also knows she must go and get it over with. When she arrives at her destination that evening, she is stunned when she finds out the man she is to spend her night with is none other than Roman Merrick. What surprises her most is that something within the deepest part of her awakens, not only a sensual desire, but a powerful love that makes her want to keep him in her life. Charlotte knows that their worlds are so far apart, she doesn't know if they could have a future together. She also is afraid of being hurt, she knows that all she wants is to hold Roman in her arms and hold him forever...One Night Is Never Enough is the second in the Secrets series by Anne Mallory. Now I am not sure if I have ever read from this author before now. I want to say I have, but if I had it would have been many years ago. So I am still unsure, but I am curious as to why I haven't read more from her. She is fantastic. I loved every moment of this, I felt like I was totally involved in the story and it was so enthralling at some points it was a challenge to put it down. I read it within a day easily, and I just fell in love with this captivating tale of sensual passion and a tender love that could just break your heart. Merrick is such a dangerous hero, he doesn't apologize for anything and from the beginning we see that once he wants Charlotte, he does everything to secure her. He has no regrets and I loved seeing such a bold hero, never afraid of anything. Charlotte is a fighter, she doesn't cower in fear when she is suppose to spend a night with a stranger. She has no idea who he is and what will happen, and just boldly goes in, with courage and zest and doesn't hold anything back. Frankly what happens that night really surprised me in a way. I never expected that certain outcome, but was definitely pleased and heart warmed to see such a strong hero be so tender and caring toward Charlotte. I just loved the way these two sparked and sizzled toward each other. It was such fun seeing them interact. The descriptions in the story weren't too bad, definitely made me almost feel like it was real. I did feel like there was a strong plot that takes the reader on a wild adventure. I was totally have a jolly good time from the first page to the last page. There was such a fresh and invigorating appeal to this story that had me charmed all the way through. A Page turner that will make you feel like you are falling in love for the very first time. A True Masterpiece!!! Definitely a must read for any who loved a sensual and adventurous love story.

Despite the dramatic "won in a card game" opening, I love that the arc of this story has the heroine growing in confidence and taking up the reins of her own life. This is my second Mallory book, and I'm consistently impressed with her ability to add depth and nuance to some of my favorite romance tropes. I will definitely be exploring her back catalogue.

sadly, I was only meh about this one. usually I enjoy the 'gentleman thief' books. I'm not sure why, but I just couldn't "connect" with any of the characters and often found my mind wandering away from the story. maybe I'll try again later

ONE NIGHT IS NEVER ENOUGH by Anne Mallory is a delightful historical romance set in Regency England. This story of love, romance, sweet sensuality, finding the courage to follow your dreams and family betrayal. The characters are interesting, with witty banter, and intriguing. The hero is sexy, dangerous,to follow anywhere kind of guy, with deep ties to the back side of town, and is a really great guy. The heroine,is beautiful, sexy, courageous in more ways than one. She is determined to give her younger sister a chance in society without scandal attached. Her father will not win any father of the year rewards. Her mother has go into herself and could care less about her daugthers futures.I would suggest if you are looking for a different take on historical romance with a little twist than this would be one to look into getting. It has lower class meeting upper class and follow their hearts instead of what society expects them to follow. This was a great, page turning story from beginning to end. This book was received for the purpose of review from Net Galley and details can be found at Avon,an imprint of Harper Collins and My Book Addiction and More.
