The great thing about Bobbie Houston’s book, I’ll Have What She’s Having, (other than the very cool title!) is that you feel like you are getting encouragement from a trusted friend over coffee. Bobbie is poignantly honest about her own journey into leadership, and she presents her story in such a way that you feel confident you too can make the journey. We all have an obligation to live a life that is a help and inspiration to others, and this book gives you the courage to try. You will love it, and then you will get one for a friend!

About the Author
Always Grateful
I wish to acknowledge and give honor where honor is due . . .
To Brian, I am so glad we fell in love! Thank you for being a faithful and loyal husband, father, and partner in life. Thank you for shaping our world into what it is today.
To the three most generous, loving, and accommodating children—Joel, Ben, and Laura. Whatever did we do to deserve you handsome three?
To faithful, loyal, and true friends, who love us and are constant sources of encouragement and inspiration!
To our
parents, Frank and Hazel Houston and Doreen and Arthur McDonald, for depositing your best into us. We honor you.
To the greatest church on the planet—Hillsong Church! You are simply the best. God put us all together, and then he stamped us with blessing and favor. Isn’t that amazing? I praise the team alongside us who work with such devotion and diligence to achieve the dream. They own it as passionately as we do.
And to the love of my life—my heavenly Father who considered and loved me before the foundations of the earth. To Jesus Christ for knocking loud and clear on the door of my heart and then drawing me unto himself; and to the dear Holy Spirit, who I am discovering is the perfect Helper, Traveling Companion, and Friend.
INTRODUCTION
The Ultimate Compliment
Who can forget that famous scene in the 1989 movie When Harry Met Sally, when actress Meg Ryan simulated a climactic moment in a crowded cafe? The response, I’ll have what she’s having!
from an envious female onlooker inspired the title of this book. Perhaps your response is similar to my dear husband’s response: Bobbie, you can’t be serious. You can’t call a book that!
But I did.
I’ll have what she’s having!
Could it be the ultimate compliment? Could it be the most rewarding compliment a person might receive? That someone else would observe your lifestyle, attitude, sense of purpose, resolve, and conviction, and then desire the same in her own life? I personally do believe it is the ultimate compliment and also a mandate that belongs to every Christian woman, young or mature, regardless of whether she is in actual leadership or not.
I chose to write this not because I think I have all the answers. I certainly do not pretend to know it all because I am also still on my journey of life and discovery, but I write it for two reasons.
Many years ago, as my husband Brian and I began our journey in ministry, we attended a conference where I encountered a beautiful young woman in the bathroom who exclaimed, I’d hate to be a pastor’s wife!
This response and attitude was not uncommon back then, and I can only surmise that somewhere, some pastor’s wife had left a very unpleasant taste in this young woman’s mouth.
At the time, my heart was greatly saddened. In what was really only a very brief encounter, I remember reflecting, I am also a young woman. I am a young pastor’s wife. I am new to the things of God and new to the things of ministry. The entire journey of marriage and motherhood is just beginning for me. Yet upon hearing that comment, something almost rose within me and cried, Dear Lord, please help me to live my life in such a way that no woman ever looks at me and says, I’d hate to be her. I’d hate to be in the ministry. I’d hate to be in leadership.
That’s the first reason.
The second reason occurred to me at the close of one of our annual Hillsong Leadership Conferences in Sydney, Australia. Countless men and women came and thanked Brian and me, our team, and our church for standing strong and firm. They thanked us for our openness, honesty, and transparency. I realized we had shared truths that could help others overcome. We are always humbled by such response to our ministry, and without hesitation we give God the glory because where would any of us be without his grace? However, isn’t this what leadership and ministry are really about? People are not going to look at our lives and comment, I’ll have what they’re having
or I’ll have what she’s having
if our lives reflect insecurity, defeat, and hopelessness.
Every woman who declares that Jesus Christ is her Lord and Savior should reflect—or be in the process of learning to reflect—a life of confidence, victory, blessing, fulfillment, and destiny. Yes—every woman! That’s you, girl! The Amplified Bible magnificently describes the person who is blessed
as one who is happy, fortunate, to be envied
(Gen. 30:13). That means we ought to be blessed and happy. We ought to be experiencing a fortunate and prosperous life, and we ought to be enviable in the purest sense.
I pray with all my heart that the time God gives me on this planet will reflect the goodness of my incredible Savior. I pray that the gorgeous women—the young and the mature—that God has entrusted into our care and spiritual stewardship will look at my life and want what is in me. Not that they will see Bobbie Houston, but rather Bobbie Houston in Christ
—smiling at life, succeeding, enjoying, and fulfilling her God-given potential and destiny. I hope that these thoughts and the truth found in God’s Word will bless and inspire you to become the awesome woman that God has designed you to be.
Before we go any further, let me share something with you. You, dear friend, whoever you are and wherever you are, are precious, priceless, and extremely important
