    Dear Confirmand:

In the past, you may have related to God in a family kind of way. You accepted certain truths about God because your parents and other caring adults accept them. That was a pleasing thing to God, who has instructed you to honor your father and mother (Matthew 15:4).

Now that you’ve completed your Christian confirmation, however, things have changed. You have received the understanding you need to make your beliefs and convictions your own—to grow and mature in your own relationship with God.

On your Confirmation: Promises for Guys has been designed to help you continue to grow and become established in your personal faith. Use it when you need to remember what the Bible says on certain topics. Use it to memorize important verses that will strengthen and encourage you. We’ve also added devotional comments to some topics that we hope you will find helpful as you strive to become a godly man.

    ATONEMENT

    HEBREWS 9:28

Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

    COLOSSIANS 2:13–14

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.

    1 JOHN 2:2

Jesus Christ is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

    1 JOHN 4:10

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

    ROMANS 8:1–2

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

    ISAIAH 43:1

But now, this is what the Lord says—he who created you…. Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.

    HEBREWS 9:15

Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

    MATTHEW 26:28

This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

    1 PETER 1:18–19

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

    BAPTISM

    LUKE 3:16

John answered them all, I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

    EPHESIANS 4:4–6

There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called—one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

    1 PETER 3:21

Water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

    ROMANS 6:3–4

Don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

    COLOSSIANS 2:11

In Jesus you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

    ACTS 2:38–39

Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.

    BELIEF

    JOHN 3:16

Jesus said, For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

    ROMANS 10:9–10

If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

    JOHN 6:47

Jesus said, I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.

    ACTS 16:31

Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.

    JOHN 11:25–26

Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?

    JOHN 7:38

Jesus said, Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.

    ACTS 10:43

All the prophets testify about Jesus Christ that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.

    JOHN 1:12

To all who received Christ, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

    JOHN 20:29

Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not
