About this ebook
The Elizabethan Bond is back . . .
Under the threat of a second Spanish Armada, John Shakespeare is sent to Lancashire to guard over England's secret weapon and its inventor, the maverick magician Dr. Dee.
But nothing is so simple when the country is a hotbed of secret loyalties and civil unrest. During his mission, Shakespeare stumbles upon Catholic priests in hiding, a mysterious Bohemian seductress, and—of course—murder.
Between facing off with a nefarious witch hunter and attending one of the first performances of A Midsummer Night's Dream, the intrepid John Shakespeare fights to stay alive while on the hunt for a deadly traitor.

Reviews for Traitor
5 ratings3 reviews
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is the fourth novel in the author's series of Elizabethan murder mysteries featuring John Shakespeare. I have felt fairly lukewarm about this series compared to the other Tudor mystery series I have followed. While it had its moments and aspects of interest (the vagabond sub-culture, for example), the plot rather dragged and I found it too convoluted. I warmed only slightly to John and his associate Boltfoot Cooper, who are not for me in the same league as Matthew Shardlake and Jack Barak. Shakespeare's adopted son Andrew Woode impressed, though. 3.5/5
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5John Shakespeare is sent to retrieve Dr. Dee from Lord Derby's manor and becomes entangled in potential poisoning investigation. Boltfoot must protect Mr. Ivory and the perspective glass from would-be marauders and thieves. Andrew Woode, Shakespeare's adopted son, has been accused of a felony and is on the run. These mysteries and events are all masterfully intertwined in this edition/episode of the Shakespeare mysteries. The narrative is heavily yet delicately detailed allowing for intense action and plot as well as character development.Characters from prior episodes, as well as new characters, are true to life and develop as the story progresses.Historical accuracy is consistent throughout.Overall, an intense read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Continues the exploits of John Shakespeare, brother of the more famous William. Shakespeare is sent on a mission to unravel another plot against England and Queen Elizabeth. The plot involves Dr. Dee and a secret weapon which needs to be found and used against the enemy.Less interesting than the preceding three books,it still has its moments. I have to admit to struggling with it towards the middle of the book.
