    Rhiannon Frater's Fighting to Survive won the Dead Letter Award for Best Novel from Mail Order Zombie. The first book in the As the World Dies trilogy, The First Days also won the Dead Letter Award and was named one of the Best Zombie Books of the Decade by the Harrisburg Book Examiner. Tor Books began bringing this series to a wider audience with the Spring 2011 publication of The First Days.

      Fighting to Survive by Rhiannon Frater is a trilogy of books about two female friends who are surviving and at times, thriving, during a zombie apocalypse. Part thriller, part romance, I find these books a light-hearted romp through gore and mayhem. The two friends, Katie and Jenni, have become kick-ass survivors and are now part of a small community that has carved out a safe place from zombies and, most recently, a group of red-neck bandits.There is plenty of action in these books, both zombie hunting and the tracking of the killer among them. They also have to confront and defeat the group of bandits that have been robbing, looting, murdering and kidnapping in the area and have now turned their sights on the walled fort that our main characters are living in.These books have become great escape reads for me with it’s “good vs bad” themes. The author provides lots of over-the-top action along with plenty of romance and humor that keep the books moving quickly and the reader engaged in the story. While the book is not to be taken too seriously, it does provide plenty of entertainment and more than enough zombie gore. I am looking forward to reading the next book.

      This one covered about 4 months and ends with Christmas, 9 months after the first day. The newly established community begins to organise themselves by electing a mayor, searching for supplies, rescuing survivors giving rise to more POVs, and attempting to expand their living quarters to include the hotel. This is interrupted by a crime, attempted rape, on which everyone has an opinion on how to judge and punish the perpetrator but the decision is taken out of the peoples’ hands when an unknown vigilante takes action. Having to deal with those who completely abandoned their humanity meant more tough decisions had to be made, doing previously unethical and criminal acts in order to do protect the majority. The old adage “the needs of the few outway the needs of the many” came to mind. I loved all of this. They really were “fighting to survive”.

      Fertility as a theme makes an appearance in both the lives of our Thelma and Louise as Katie tries for a baby and Jenni reveals she can't have any more children due to her husband forcing her get sterilised. Yet another reason to hate the bastard.

      I've been looking forward to getting back with Jenni and Katie as they fight their way through zombie hoards and figure out their complicated lives, and I'm happy to say that Fighting to Survive is a superbly thrilling read! Frater has once again balanced the violence, gore and horror of a zombocalpyse with a strong sense of community within the Fort and heartwarming relationships between her major characters.Having enjoyed reading about Katie in the last book, I found that this time around I still enjoyed her character but became a little weary at the way her sexuality is treated. I understand that perhaps in the small Texan town these things are considered of huge import, but it just became ridiculous the way that everyone had opinions of her sexuality and it became this big issue. And of course, after the Incident in the bathroom, it became an even bigger deal, apparently up for debate by everyone in the community. I believe Frater was trying to demonstrate how a largely heterosexual community reacts to someone who is homo- or bi- sexual, but the issue was dragged on for far too long, in my opinion.Jenni changed so much in this book that I hardly recognised her. Suddenly confident in herself and no longer relying on the approval of others, she stopped being so clingy and just let Katie alone, which was nice. Their relationship became a lot more balanced once Juan came into the picture! I still really enjoy Jenni's bond with her step-son because it's so endearing to read. I similarly enjoyed reading from Travis' point of view: he is incredibly dedicated to his community and to Katie, and I feel he is one of the more realistic characters in the trilogy. However, there are also a bunch of characters used in this book that I got bored with very quickly: the snobby rich couple who thought they should be in control of everything, the walking, talking stereotype of an African-American homosexual, the ignorant bigot who turns violent at the drop of a hat.One of the most riveting sequences in the book is the clearing of the hotel, to create space for the residents of the Fort, and it's done perfectly, managing to give me shivers and set my heart racing. Unlike the previous book, which dealt with Jenni and Katie running from the zombie hoards and finally finding sanctuary within the Fort, this book also deals with creating a functioning, positive community for the survivors.Laws and penalties have to be thought up, a governing structure has to be implemented and each member has to be held accountable for their actions. The main characters are very much present in all of these decisions, and it is nice to see them do something other than hunt and kill zombies (although there is plenty of that too!).I am loving this series! It's so brave and enthralling, with heart pounding action scenes and believable interactions between the characters. Frater's As the World Ends series is a must read for all horror and zombie fans out there, but I also highly recommend it to readers looking for something new to read.You can read more of my reviews at Speculating on SpecFic.

      It's Great to be back with Katie and Jenni. There is a good mix of action and drama in this one. Jenni is in for the ride of her life all throughout the book. I especially loved the surprise with Travis and Katie. It is one of the things that makes me look forward to the next book. I did have one major problem with this book, and that was the fact that she added a whole section that was written from the dog's point of view (Jack). This did not help the story. In fact it threw me off balance and than the author went right back to the people. It was REALLY strange and was not needed at all! It made the novel feel cartoonish. The rest of it was well written. It wasn't as good as the first but was still enjoyable.

      Well, if you know me at all- even if you don't and we're just passing acquaintances... you've heard me talk about Rhiannon Frater's As the World Dies trilogy. This series is by far my favorite horror/zombie series of books EVER. I'm literally DYING for the release of Siege in April!Fighting to Survive is the second book in this series of zombie epic-ness, otherwise known as the As The World Dies trilogy. In The First Days, Katie and Jenny survived the zombie hordes that swarmed their city, and safely made it to a survivor camp in Ashley Oaks (yep, the name still tickles me!) with Jenni's son Jason's in tow.As more and more survivors arrive, they're running out of space. UNLESS they decide to take back the hotel that stands in the middle of camp and expand their boundaries. The threat of zombies lurking around every corner forces Travis to pause... until he doesn't have a choice.Jenni is still plagued with nightmares of her dead children and Katie is still haunted by the memory of her beautiful wife. My affinity toward Jenni doesn't falter one bit in this book, I still ABSOLUTELY ADORE her. "We all know Jenni is batshit crazy, but that's okay. She's good at killing the goddamn zombies." ~EdThe hotel was worse than anyone could have imagined, there are WAY more zombies inside than originally anticipated and Jenni ends up LOCKED inside a room with not ONE... not TWO... but THREE freaking zombies!!!! Oh. My. God.A zombie kid runs off the ELEVATOR after they get the power back on... And HOW do you kill a zombie with a metal plate in it's head?Ooooh, and just an FYI... be on the lookout for Otis Calhoun- aka: Crazy Calhoun, he is a freaking riot! He rides up to the fort screaming about the CIA, mafia clones and a government conspiracy, "So even if they sit outside my house and snort up on coke so they don't feel a damn thing, I will defend myself. A good knock to the head seems to do the trick. Now the aliens, well they don't die so easily..." ~Crazy Calhoun(he's talking about the zombies...)Once again, Rhiannon Frater completely blows my mind with yet another heart pounding, gut wrenching, emotional and STUNNINGLY written book that you will not want to miss! Fighting to Survive will leave you BEGGING for Siege, the third and final installment of the As the World Dies trilogy!

      Fighting To Survive picks up where The First Days left off in the As The World Dies trilogy. The story follows along with Katie and Jenni and all of their new friends and family. There is more character interaction and development than in the first book, as well as the zombie scenes that make the story such fun to read.
