About this ebook
We had split the atom, but had not yet been split by a land in Southeast Asia. Still, beneath the idyllic veneer of the 1950s, enormous stresses were building.
Cheese Grits explores the wonders of youth and the events of the times through the unfiltered eyes of the children who lived them. Humor, adolescent angst, and naïve confidence come into play as children struggle toward adulthood.

Born in Cedartown, Georgia in 1949, the family moved to Atlanta before my first birthday. Childhood and early teens were spent in Grove Park, a community in the northwest part of the city. Many of the stories in Cheese Grits originated in Grove Park, along the banks of Proctor Creek and in Mr. Austin’s pine forest. In 1964, when I was fifteen, the family moved to the town of Forest Park, about twenty miles south of Atlanta. Forest Park presented a dramatic cultural shift as well as introduction to a whole new world of misadventure. Forest Park, and surroundings, provided a number of humorous stories. After high school, I briefly attended college in South Georgia, (see The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia) before a tour in the US Navy (see Having a Really Bad Day). Subsequent to military service, I earned an associate’s degree at Clayton Junior College and began a long corporate career, working with both Asian and European companies. Along the way, I earned my bachelor’s and master’s degrees.Much of my adult life was spent in California and Arizona, but in 2006, a chance to return to the southeast presented itself—I and wife, Terry, jumped at the opportunity and relocated to Nashville, Tennessee where we currently share our home with our fifteen-plus pound cat, Jolly-Ollie.Cheese Grits is my first book of short stories. Other publications include Extreme Restoration, a massive (700-plus pages) reference book about the accurate restoration of antique American clocks (http://www.xrestore.com). A number of how-to articles based on the book have appeared in magazine form. The stories in Cheese Grits are based on actual events, although literary license has been taken to improve readability or as the result of poor memory. To learn more about Cheese Grits, or to share a story of your own, visit http://www.timespastpublishing.comYou can also contact me: tom.cheesegrits@yahoo.com
