About this ebook

A futuristic rendition of Operation Rock Avalanche by Battle Company, 1st of the 503rd. It was an after story from A New Hope. Based in the universe created by David Drake (with his permission). This book is an "additional" story set in the same timeframe as the "A New Hope" ebook story and intended to be part of the timeline, but due to space I had to make it a separate story.

    Operation Rockslide

This was by no means an operation I was a participant in, but it’s actually Battle Company, 1st of the 503rd, 173rd Airborne Brigade’s deadliest mission in the Korengal Valley.  So to be clear, this is an extrapolation of that engagement.  There will be inconsistencies, so bear with me.

Karen, we’re going to need you to check out the area around Laguna, a small village just on the eastern side of the Pollo Mountains.  Colonel Olsson said as they sat there in the conference room.  Holding his datapad and showing her the area he was referencing where he wanted her to go.  It was a quiet day in the BN TOC, patrols were out, but nothing was happening so far, which was good for her at least.  Yesterday was a harsh one, with a combat car being nearly destroyed by buzzbomb fire but a lucky artillery strike saved them from imminent destruction and further aggravating the Colonel.  Fact of the matter was, he had no intelligence on what was going on there, whether it was just a threat area, or what, for that matter entirely which is why he wanted to send her in there.  Sure there were satellites and imagery but he needed an old school walk-through to see what the ground was really like and whether he needed to divert forces there or just leave it alone and concentrate on the Pollo and surrounding areas.

Yes sir.  Lt. Juniper nodded.  What is the timeframe of this operation, if I may ask sir? Noticing a lot of inconsistencies with Colonel Olsson’s behavior she wondered idly, perhaps this was a politically motivated mission?  The whole idea did come off as rushed, but exactly how rushed and how long it was going to take them was yet to be determined.

Colonel Olsson shrugged.  A couple of days, walk the area and see what’s out there, and if anything develops, I’ll see where I should focus future operations.  Colonel Agruba is looking for the strengths of possible insurgent activity in the area, and we got the lucky numbers to go in.

Yes sir.  Lt. Juniper nodded again.  Idly wondering why they the ones who were going in, but then again, it was Colonel Agruba.  Half tempted to ask if he had said thanks for helping him out at all but she knew it was pointless because a woman was asking, not a male.  It seemed the nationals were as usual, sitting back and doing nothing while of course the Frisians did the work that the nationals could do themselves.

Submit your plan within twenty-four hours.  Colonel Olsson said finally, as really, what more could he expect and what more could he say?  Knowing that this rising Lieutenant knew her shit, better than some of his own Platoon Leaders in his Battalion.  He wanted to contact Colonel Brown regarding a possible transfer, if he could get away with it.  Captain Henderson of course can supply you with all you need, as we’re getting some good satellite images now.

    Yes sir.

Dismissed.  Colonel Olsson said, as he had a strong feeling she’d need all the time she could find in order to get this operation worked out.  In the tactical sense there was no rush to get the mission done, but he needed to develop more of the AO than he really wanted to, some pushing from the nationals had
