Introduction
At His departure, Jesus instructed the disciples to go to Jerusalem to await the promise of the Father. On the day of Pentecost, this promise was fulfilled with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit was given so that the work of Jesus Christ would continue on the earth. The Ministerial Endowments Series is designed to bring clarity to the gifts and ministries given to the Church. It is our prayer that believers will be enlightened and encouraged.
In this publication:
God promised Israel godly shepherds. The focus of this book is to bring clarity and understanding to the pastoral office and the pastoral anointing. This information will help individuals to recognize the operations of this anointing in their lives and in the lives of others. It is our hope that believers will develop a greater respect and appreciation for the pastoral office and gift. *****
1 - What is a Pastor?
The first ministry to be on display in the New Testament Church was that of the apostle. Secondarily, we see the ministry of the prophets and teachers with the apostles with men such as Agabus, Judas, Apollos, and Silas. Further reading shows the ministry of the evangelist was recognized in Philip. The pastoral ministry developed (last) as Paul and others set elders and leaders over the churches that were established.
Today, we see that there is a shifting in the above model. The pastoral ministry is now the most prevalent and accepted ministry in the Church, while there is debate surrounding the others. Regardless of this phenomenon, pastoral ministry is vital to the furtherance and growth of the Church.
The word pastor originates from the Greek word poimen, which literally means shepherd. Pastors are given to feed the flock of God, lead them into green pastures, and protect against wolves in sheep’s clothing.
Not all pastors will discharge their duty in the same manner; neither will they all have the same anointing. Pastors’ ministries will vary in demonstration and execution. Before going into detail concerning the ministry of the pastor, we want to present some foundational truths concerning their ministries.
Pastors are the shepherds and overseers of the people of God. Their title describes their function; they care for the people of God in the Spirit, as a shepherd does sheep. They watch out for the souls of those whom they lead. Pastors, seemingly, wear more hats than any of the other offices. They have to serve as counselors, preachers, teachers,
