The Shot Heard a novella by Alex Wilson

He was cold. Not physically cold with his double layer of clothing. But, emotionally cold. No nerves. Everything was muscle memory from well-honed manual practice. All parts snapped and clicked into place in rapid order. The folding stock and scope snapped onto the receiver. The sound suppressor twirled smoothly onto the threaded muzzle. The magazine seated firmly and crisply into the magazine well. The magazine held but one Lapua .338 mm Magnum cartridge with a 250 grain bullet. There would be no second shot. All was in place with speed and precision and with gloves on.

Now, the crucial part of zeroing in the scope without test shots. The marksman had rolled his coat into a pillow upon which to rest the rifle. The pillow was put on the parapet that surrounded the roof of the office building and the rifle laid reverently upon it. The shooter adjusted the folding one-legged stool upon which he would sit and extended his arms on either side of the weapon before actually embracing it. The parapet, pillow rest and stool obviated the need for a sling, his usual way of immobilizing the rifle. With the seat at the optimum height, he was ready to begin the methodical countdown to the shot.

First, he gently nuzzled his cheek against the stock and sighted through the scope with his right hand steadying the weapon by gripping the pistol grip with moderate pressure. With his left hand, he adjusted the focus, little adjustment as the target was 600 yards away so ‘infinity’ was the appropriate setting. Now, the wind and defilation were the crucial factors. From his perch on the roof of the tall office building, he had a view of a variety of flags and even a wind sock on another office building’s heliport. The flags and the sock showed little wind activity, a couple of miles per hour from the west. The adjustments on the side-to-side orientation were dialed in. But, since he was at a higher elevation than the target, the downward trajectory of the bullet would make the strike higher than a level shot as the pull of gravity on the bullet would be less
