Table of Contents
Back in 1953, a Harvard University study showed that 3% of the students graduating that year actually wrote down their specific career goals. Twenty years later, a team of researchers interviewed the class of 1953, and found that the 3% who had written down their goals were worth more financially than the other 97% combined. (Make no mistake, writing down goals pays off, big time!) Let’s get started.
Chapter One—Begin at the End
Chapter Two—Balance is the Key
Chapter Three—Take Stock: Where are you now? What are your strengths? What are your Barriers?
Chapter Four—Work Backwards/Time Management
Chapter Five— Affirmations/Visualizations/Meditation
Chapter Six—Develop a Positive Attitude
Chapter Seven—Continuous Improvement/Staying Motivated
Chapter One: Begin at the End
Your Vision:
Sometimes the best way to get started is to get really clear about where you want to end up. Stephen Covey, in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, says Habit #2 is Begin with the End in Mind.
He suggests doing so by imagining your own funeral and things you hope others will say about you.
When I think about what I want people to say at my funeral, it is things like, She was a great friend.
She always knew the right thing to say to help me feel better.
She was a wonderful, caring and supportive life partner.
She was a great mother, who taught her kids good moral values and then held them accountable for living their own lives true to their own beliefs.
She was a courageous risk taker who had a high level of integrity.
Her ideas helped so many other people to live healthy, productive, fulfilling lives and she actually walked her own talk. She lived the very concepts that she promoted.
She didn’t turn anyone away and held out a helping hand to anyone in need.
She was awesome at helping people get along better with the important people in their lives and being the best they could be.
She was generous and good spirited.
She had a sense of inner peace about her.
She was patient and kind.
What about you? What is important to you? What do you want others to say about you in the end? What things do you want to accomplish? What kind of wealth do you want to accumulate? What relationships are important and how will you demonstrate that? What will be your spiritual practices? How do you want to take care of yourself and those who are important to you? What life work do you want to be remembered for? What character traits do you want to be remembered as possessing?
Take some time to truly answer those questions. And while you are at, there are some things I want you to consider.
Your Life’s Purpose:
Think about what your life’s purpose is. Do you know? What were you put on this earth to do? What is your higher purpose? How do you best serve others? What is your unique talent, skill or ability that makes things better for other people? We all have a purpose. There is something special and exceptional about each and every one of us. Do you know what your purpose is?
From the time I was in
