Bike the Golden Gate - R. Randall Schroeder
About the author
I’ve lived in the Bay Area most of my life and routinely take visiting friends and family around town to see the sights. That means I’m always on the lookout for new and interesting ways to send them home with the OMG I had such a great time
feeling.
When I was in my teens, I lived in Monterey, California and relatives referred to me as the family tour guide, because I loved showing them around the Monterey Peninsula. I thoroughly enjoyed taking them to great photo spots that included little stopovers to stretch their legs, plus making sure we stopped at the best time for lunch or dinner. I loved orchestrating the perfect outings, based on the people involved. The younger ones got a bit more exercise, the older ones got to see more things from the car or with very short walks. Everyone always had a great time.
In 2006, I started a blog about San Francisco. I started it as a photo blog, because I love photography. My grandfather and my father, both avid photographers, were a big influence on me. I had my first camera when I was eight years old. Film was expensive then, but my Dad had a connection at a photography shop; so we got discounts. This allowed me to learn by doing.
A friend recently suggested I put together a series of itineraries that people could download and use on their trip here. I loved the idea and immediately started putting this one together. It’s been fun, but it’s a lot of work — more than I’d realized, but partly because of the level of detail and organization it takes to pull it together.

The perfect San Francisco adventure
Normally, bridges and bikes don’t mix, but this ride is safe because it’s divided. Wide sidewalks on each side, protected from traffic in the middle. Walkers on one side and bikers on the other. Easy
The perfect adventure.
San Francisco has a lot to offer, so you won’t have time to see it all. This trip will take you to 15 of the most famous sights, and give you some exercise at the same time. The best part? You can do the ride at your own pace — the power bar
version or the cracked crab lunch
version. Either way, you’ll be trekking across the famous Golden Gate Bridge. It’s safe, exhilarating and just plain fun.
You might think, I didn’t come on this trip to exercise,
but it’s really not nearly as much about exercise as you may think. It’s fun. Most of the trip is flat land (see the disclaimer below), and there are plenty of places to stop, lock the bike and
