About this ebook

You are not yet “More than a Conqueror” if you win over nakedness with clothes; hunger with food; poverty with riches, and sickness with health, etc.

In boxing, the strength of a fighter is usually erroneously judged by the power of his punches. This book explains that the real strength of the fighter is determined by his ability to remain standing after having received the best punch from his opponent. Faith is not at its best when it sends mountians packing.

If a believer has faith that can move mountains, the book is not asking him to stop in favour of the “best option”. It is however exposing the believer to the fact that even if a mountain doesn’t move, it is not the end of the journey, and that, interestingly, an adamant mountain can still give a believer a chance to register the ultimate victory—becoming more than a conqueror in the process.

This book calls believers to participate in scrutinising the options that usually present themselves when faith meets a mountain. In your spiritual journey, you will meet different types of mountains:
i) Obedient mountains—They obey immediately they are commanded to leave;
ii) Lingering mountains—They stay longer after they have been commanded to leave, and when they leave, they do so reluctantly (Patient faith is a necessity in this case).
iii) Defiant mountains—They defy the command to leave, they remain planted and give no sign that they may move (That a mountain has refused to move doesn't necessarily mean lack of faith).

In each of the three cases above, one will have to consider different options and engage a different spiritual gear.

After considering the possible options we have in response to mountains we may face in our spiritual journey, this book identifies one option that is better than sending the mountain fleeing. Actually, according to the Lord Jesus, faith that moves mountains is a 'small' faith (Matt. 17:20). Remember, however, that if you have faith that moves mountains, the book is not asking you to stop doing so.

    Preface

Sometimes we allow ourselves to act impulsively without scrutinising the options we have. If we don’t act impulsively, we may act in line with the pop culture and social pressure. Sometimes we make our choices in the absence of knowledge. This happens when we are either ignorant of all the options available or when we lack insight into each option. Someone said: It doesn’t really matter what you know, it matters what you do with what you know.

We can only be prepared to deal with the consequences of our choices if we make informed judgement. It is very important that we know all the options available. And that is not the end: it pays to subject each option to a thorough scrutiny.

Because the devil is always trying to limit our excellence in the things of God, we may not be surprised that he works overtime to keep us away from the best options. His aim is always to either make us settle for the counterfeit and the depraved or the mediocre and compromised. When he gets us to settle for the wrong option, he shall have succeeded in his diabolic sabotage of mankind.

It is important that whenever we are faced with choices, we sit down and explore the options available. We must start by asking the questions: What options do we have and what are the repercussions of each? The prerequisite for making a good decision is by being exposed to all the options available; we would then be able to weigh them against their repercussions, both short term and long term. This will enable us gain insight so that we don’t act irrationally, but more important, we will be prepared to deal with the consequences of our choices.

In this book, we are going to look at the options we have when we come across a mountain that seems to challenge our faith. We will see the implications and consequences of the said options.

When we take our time and ponder over the options and their subsequent consequences, it may not be difficult to eliminate the undesirable options. The reason is that even before we employ an ‘intense’ scrutiny, some options will begin to overtly show that they are not beneficial at all. As we scrutinise, we would also uncover the options that offer fleeting relief but harbour lasting grief. Though we may be compulsively drawn to take the offer of the instant relief, we must remember that when the time comes to reap what we sowed, we would have to live with constant grief.

We must always seek God to help us resist the temptation of giving in to compulsion; we must resist the attractions of brief relief. It is only by so doing that we can take time to make informed judgement.

May the reader realise that our future is much more important than our present. Our present is important as far as we use it to secure and insure our future. The decisions we make at present, depending on what they are, are able to either secure our future or gamble it away into emptiness.

    Introduction

Making a decision when it is not easy doing so, needs clear spirit and informed judgement. Tough decisions can give rise to vulnerability. Vulnerability may make us settle for the easy way out, or a momentary solution. There are factors that come to bear upon us as they compete to tilt our preference. Our starting point as believers should be in this wise: It is better to make a decision based on conviction rather than doing so based on impulsion and convenience.

As we struggle to make a decision as believers, we will face the following questions:

    • Do we make decisions based on our nature or on our nurture? In other words, is it our personality or our society that influences our choices? What do we do when the two are in conflict?

    • Do we make decisions based on the culture or do we make them based on the Scripture? What do we do when the two are at odds?

    • Is our decision influenced by the short-term relief as it disregards the conceivable long-term grief?

    • Do we aim at pleasing men or pleasing God?

    • Are our decisions impulsive or are they reflexive?

Because all the above factors will compete for our attention and approval, they tend to make an already difficult situation even trickier. The only safe area to base our decisions on is The Scripture. But even this can sometimes, knowingly or unknowingly, be subjected to erratic interpretations and unrealistic expectations. This is why we need the guidance of the Holy Spirit to help us navigate on the right course away from the crossroad of confusion.

Most of the decisions we are wont to make as Christians may not be obviously depraved. The devil knows that it is extremely difficult to lure serious Christians by open wickedness. Because of this he wraps his deceptions in a deluded scriptural package and well-reasoned carnality. Nevertheless, if we allow the Holy Spirit to search our heart and prepare us to face any persecution, the repercussions that may come as a result of obeying God will not be unbearable. Again, if we allow the Holy Spirit to search our heart, God will open our eyes to see and our hearts to discern the shrewdness with which the enemy embellishes his mischief.

In our Christian walk, we have to brace ourselves to pass some tests. There is no genuine commitment that will not be tested. If one commits his life to Christ and goes through life without facing a test, that should be a very rare exception indeed.

The teachings we get about our commitment; the books we read; the convictions we develop in the process and the discipline we train ourselves into will determine how we respond to the tests. And when we talk about tests, we are not referring to difficulties more than we do to comfort management. When we talk about tests, people always think about difficulties. The truth, however, is that comfort can be the trickiest test ever.

Tests are there to help us attune our acts with the pact of our faith. Tests pose the following questions to us:

    • How serious are you about your faith—will you allow comfort to quench it or difficulty to erase it?

    • How much can you give for it, and how much can you take for it?

The subject matter of ‘the test’ in this book is, however, not the test presented by comfort but that which is represented by a ‘mountain’—a difficulty. Difficulties that God allows us to go through may be what He uses to ‘refine’ our faith. He is not the One causing the difficulties but He allows them and because He is able to work everything together for the good of those who love Him, He doesn’t always stop them. The apostle Peter has the following to say:

In this [new birth into a living hope] you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed—1 Peter 1:6-7 (NIV).

The two explanations that usually come up whenever we attempt to justify sufferings that some people may go through are: they either lack faith or are ‘paying’ or being disciplined for a hidden sin. These may be true but they are not always the case. There is the other side that is not much talked about, namely, proving if our faith is genuine. A genuine faith must always stand the test of ‘adamant mountains.’

I want you to imagine yourself walking along the path of faith. You come across a mountain—a huge mountain. The mountain stands in your way—between you and your destination. You look at the mountain and start thinking of what to do next. The mountain is intimidatingly huge and obnoxiously adamant.

At the foot of the mountain, you try to recall what you have learnt about how people dealt with the mountains that stood on their way. You also try to find out what your predecessors did with this mountain. The fact that it is standing there means that nobody has been able to get it out of that place. You take time to think through the options available.

    Scrutinising the Options

Most of the options available are discernible by the trails left behind by people who had travelled this path before. And how lucky we are who live in this generation! From the questions asked by the people who went ahead of us, we find
